The Puma gearbox and clutch do have issues, but when working should work every bit as well and probably better than the Td5 setup, so I am afraid you mechanic is misleading you. Generally the MT82 box has a better change than the R380 (which is really a bit of a dog), and most of the Puma issues are concerned either with the early clutch driven plates (the springs fail) or backlash in the driveline which causes a clunk and snatch on changing gear.
It does indeed sound as though your operating mechanism is not disengaging the clutch fully, as though it has air in it. Do you know that the job was done properly, and do you know the quality of parts fitted? If I needed a new clutch at the moment I woudl only get a main dealer, or a very trusted independent to do it (actually I'd probably do it myself) because I'd want to know exactly what quality of components had been fitted. My Puma has always had a nicer and better gearchange than my Td5 Disco2. |

My Land Rover replaced clutch is rattling too. I spoke to an independent and he said he would use a "Valeo" replacement.Considering that Land Rover replaced the origional clutch at two years of age, three years and 30,000 miles ago with an origional Land Rover part surely non genuine part can't be any worse. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Your pedal travel sounds like it could need bleeding mate. Check the clutc. Oil level it may have dropped. pedal travel, is normaly a fluid issue. Sometimes its the mechanical arm/bearing that hasnt been fitted correctly. 1st step check fluid 2nd step, bleed clutch pedal. nice easy job slave cylinder is very easy to access

Slave cyl is concentric bearing type ,On the puma (cylinder and bearing in one unit) and is inside bell housing so box out to change it .but it should have been changed at same time as clutch anyway .. I would give bleeding it a go .. Sometimes clutches can been a right pain to bleed even have to back bleed sometimes to get all air out

My puma clutch as just been replaced at 39000 miles.
