+1 No, seriousley. If you have had the injectors programed and all the set up afer the VCV and injector codes manualy entered then I doubt the air flow meter is faulty as it shouldhave then failed the pilot correction process on setup. Are you sure that the "rattle"is not just hard load injector noise as you do change gear very early and work the engine loading it ? Pete Last edited by bell-auto-services on 4th Feb 2014 12:19pm. bm52....
check out the other post (do any other tdci's do this) hopefully the cleaner will help - however I've run neat on Redex for the last 2 months and its done nothing (ok not quite neat)...... vcv, MAP replaced inject / pump learns, new filters etc and underneath I can kind of tell its running sweet as nut but then this pain in the As* problem buts in and spoils all the fun???? working on the MAF and wiring at the moment and will let you know how I get on. good luck, |

Just had 4 yr service with all filters and oils changed, I have also cleaned the MAF and MAP
My MAP looked like thi, still not spanky clean but a lot better, I also have had an electronic EGR close for the last 12k miles Click image to enlarge BM52 |

Pete
Apologies as I didn't fully read your post previously. I've got to the point I'm really not sure but I believe / hope all is now sorted but still want a little more time to be sure. You are absolutely right I do tend to change gear on very low revs....and sometimes too low. however yesterday I deliberately left it in 6th till the death.....well almost...on was on an incline with relatively low throttle and I went down to c 1000 rpm and yet no obvious injector noise I still have some rattle but it's not very often and I suspect it is normal (not even sure if it could be clutch??? No idea) but I will be monitoring very closely for next few weeks). Still amazes me how smooth the engine can be and that buzzing noise you get when the environment is under load is great |

@Caterham - did you ever positively confirm what was causing this issue and what ultimately resolved it. I have a similar problem with my 2.4 Puma and have been unable to resolve it to date. Extremely frustrating.

No not 100%.
BUT. Having had a truck from new an having done 83k miles now I'm as confident as I can be that it's not injector noise at all but a clattering transfer box. I've got a new gearbox waiting to be fitted but want to fit that with a fully rebuilt transfer box.....an that where I'm struggling a little. I hop to source a suitable transfer box which I plan to fit while mines is inspected, fully rebuilt and improved. I will then refit with new gearbox. The engine seems to be running sweet as cab be and fear the issues have been transmission related but have seemed to be engine related. I know this sounds completely incompetent of me but I believe the symptoms are something anyone with limited defender knowledge could have concurred with myself. Good luck. One other thing to say. I have found that if I drive back n forth in low range it generally takes away any clattering. It's as if the linkages etc that align gears or however it works aren't set up right? |
