What's the best satin black paint for galv roof rack?
Hi folks purchased a used galvanised roof rack and although I know it does not need painting I would like to freshen it up,

I want as tough a paint as possible that I can ideally spray from cans?

Any ideas much appreciated👍

You could perhaps use a black Stonechip on it, very tough? An engine to TDi for!

When I painted my galvanised roof bars I used Hammerite Special Metal Primer followed by their satin black Smoothrite. It provides a nice finish which is generally pretty chip resistant, although it has struggled on the top surface where things like timber and bike racks have been dragged across the bars. I think most paint finishes, short of something exotic, would succumb to that sort of abuse, though.

I'd go for this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Autotek-Professi...1e82a6b137
&

If you don't use acid etch primer you will have problems with flaking off and peeling. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

A rack of that size would be quite labour intensive and costly I would imagine to buy the paint for. My Patriot was powder coated by the previous owner and the finish is very resilient. Also the usual issues that can occur between the assembly bolts and rails are erradicated as it was powder coated assembled.
Why not 'sound out' your local powder coaters you may be pleasantly surprised by the cost and not have the hassle yourself for a comparable price? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

As Custom90steve has indicated - painting any steelwork that has been hot dipped zinc galvanised is going to give you problems if the correct undercoat/prep ain't up to spec.

I smile when I see painting contractors for local authorities and railway companies brush painting street furniture - 18 months later it is usually flaking off in large areas.

Thanks Cuthbert

I think I am going to find out the cost of powder coating first,

If this is too Expensive then having looked at the paint that customsteve recommended I think you are correct 👍

Now to find a good powder coating place in the midlands?

See that happen a lot, I've seen iron railings not primed too by people that don't know usually the more deprived areas / bridge ups.
On and around the estate I live on though things are done properly with red oxide primer.

Anyway back on topic. galv is a devil if it isn't primed. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

When I did mine I used the hammerite primer and used a small gloss roller to put the paint on ,give a great finish, had it on a year now with no flaking etc

Managed to get a quote for powder coating as was £130 which I suppose not too bad Question

I think I'll go down the painting route as the roof rack will only be for occasional use.

I think I'll go for the acid etch primer and then stonechip recommended by customsteve , thanks again for advice Thumbs Up

Welcome! I'll mention just in case you didn't know both the etch primer and stone chip you can get in packs cheaper and a larger amount. Just search "Autotek acid etch 4x" or similar on ebay.
Even if it isn't enough you can get more, it does last well. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON
