Hi there!
Despite the change of the intercooler for a larger one and the new BAS remap I suffered again the problem of high temperatures and the safety management strategy. The problem happened during this weekend with temps near 30癈 with no more than 250 kg load (just 2 persons, 2 childs and the empty roof rack). We were in a uphill of approximately 12 km with an slope of 3 mt every 100 mt at speed between 110-120 kph. At the end of the slope the temp gauge goes up to the red zone very fast and the management strategy started. After few seconds we stop the car and the temperature come down very fast too (taking 5-10 second to goes up and goes down). Im concern now about what happens during the vacation period with the car fully loaded at high altitudes and towing our folding camper (1.5 ton). Any thougths about what can I check? I would personally start from scratch and put everything back to standard and repeat the drive (test).
You need to reduce the number of variables and start a known base line. Thanks for your prompt answer. This is an old history. So a 3% incline, ie gentle slope.
Do these cooling systems have a thermostat? |

What have you got in the way of diagnostic equipment - that can do live data?
Really for problems like this in the past I've thermocoupled vehicles up to trace what's the route cause.... I'd be very keen to look at actual water temps before and after radiator, themostat operation, oil temp, oil cooler in and out, air intake etc... and a couple of other things. I'd also look at coolant temp sensor. Changing the intercooler wouldn't change anything in my opinion as not an intake air temp problem. Thanks again. I have the typical Bluetooth ODBII reader with an android app that can store live data from the ECU (Torque pro). It is enough or I need something better to do the job? Do you keep your foot flat in 6th gear? Or do you change down to 5th on these climbs?
I've found that keeping the car in 6th on a long climb will increase the coolant temps to more than 96degC very quickly. Changing down to 5th then drops these coolant temps very rapidly. Aren't you pushing it to much in a "overdrive"/high gear? |

Thanks to all for the answers I have at least something to start.
In fact I use to drive in 6th all the way and probably that could be one of the reasons. On the other hand I made the same route several times before without any trouble. What is this "radiator protection net" you mention in another thread?? Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

6th should only be used to cruise on level ground (and downhill). As soon as you hit an incline and the revs drop below 2000, you should gear down to 5th. Do you also monitor your EGT? So basically the OP labours the engine in 6th, up an incline for circa 12 kilometers, and then wonders why it's hot!
