Didn't know they went up to 3k!
In seriousness though, it depends on a number of things. The revs needed increases with speed (ie you can drive happily at 1200 in second but more like 1800 in 5th/6th to have any pulling power.) I tend to try to change up around or below 2500 generally just to keep noise down in normal driving, but in the higher gears when overtaking/accelerating (in the outside lane past slower traffic etc) I can get as high as 2.8. To be honest I find that the engine makes a god awful noise at approaching 3 but I think it's fine to take it. (Some transits with the 2.4 and 5 speed cruise at nearly 3200 at 75/80ish!) I find there is nice torque 15000-2300 so try to stay there when driving. But it depends a lot on the situation. As I said though I have never found a need to get to 3, and it's pointless trying to accelerate below 1600 although cruising there is ok. Cheers David, thanks for your reply. Prior to Defender ownership the only diesel I had driven was a VW caddy van and it had an indicator to tell you when to change up, which initially I thought were really low revs, but when I got more used to it was ok and made sense. As I said being used to petrol, (cars and bikes), I'm always worried that I'd bog the motor but diesels seem to have lots of low down torque to use opposed to petrol.

Yeah with a diesel it's all about the torque, you'll find there's little point revving more than it wants to.
From listening you can hear it wants to change, and if you rev whilst putting a little pressure on the gearstick pushing it out of the gear it's in, then it will want to dip into the next gear at a certain point. If you're getting the juddering you're too low revving, and with time to can hear a distinct change in engine noise at somewhere above 2.6/2.7. I'm only 18 and struggled to start but after a year with it I know exactly what gear it wants to be in and you get used to jumping around gears more for torque more in a diesel than a petrol. Regarding the revs, simple really. Speed up change up, slow down change down. More gear changes to be done on the Defender Puma than a petrol but remember it's a 6 speed too. Immense torque it's best to be in a lower gear on hill climbs but it comes with practice. If your in a higher gear and even the slightest revs drop off, drop a gear and you'll soon power up on the power band. Un laden. Just driving practice gets you a custom to it. You don't want to rev it mad but nor keep it ticking over. Very low revs won't get you anywhere especially in higher gears because there's no power there but revving high won't be much different. Until your truck gets to operating temperature, avoid revving past 2000 too much. Once it is warmed up, you can drive it like you stole it. Note that warmed up does not mean when the temperature gauge shows that - you need to know that the oil is running at hot idle pressure, or at least that coolant temperature is > 80C.
I usually change up between 2500 - 3000. Cheers chaps, what I didn't mention was the fact that the rev counter goes up to 7000 (I think) but obviously I wouldn't want to go anywhere near that, even if it would. What I'm getting at is how far up the scale is reasonable in normal use, ie 3, 4, 5? I've never taken it past about 3.5. i've been driving for more years than I care to remember but like I said earlier I'm not used to diesels. Mind though as time goes on I'm getting more used to it and driving it is a hoot Actually quite surprised at how nippy it can be in certain gears.

I'd say upto about 4k but that shouldn't need to be much at all. 2.5 / 3k are around the average. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thinking about it, I notice a change when out of gear and raise the revs; there's a noticeable step change in the sound about 2.5k. Guessed it was just something hitting a resonant frequency and sounding different. 2009 110 XS Station Wagon |

Yeah seems others agree too 3-3.5 is the most you'd ever need or want to go to.
