a cry for HELP !
guys I know a few of you think I a moaning winge bag moaning about nothing but to be fair there's been quite a list of things that have had to be replaced so personally I think I've got reason to moan and secondly there's obviously been things to moan about.

as some of you will know I've had replacement input shaft and gearbox (replaced at circa 2years old and 2years 3 months).

although I origninally thought there were issues with the engine (and there kind of was) I'm happy this is now running right however I've got a bad feeling about the input shaft / transfer box / gear box. I'm thinking something is on its way out again. !!!

sure swap the car, sell it......easier said than done AND any why should I . I've paid for a warranty etc.

problem is I proper exaceberated....(is that how you spell it????) I proper p!ssed off with it now and just want it fixed. where can I go - who knows their onions enough to point out whats wrong with it?

I know people have said the input shaft is undersized etc but I fail to see how some can do 200k miles towing and not fail where mine has an incredably easy life and fails at c20k miles - its just doesn't make sense. in my mind something hasn't been put together right (but I can think what or how) else is causing the shaft to fail?

so who's gonna have a look at it for me? I'll happily make you a nice cup of tea and some biscuits Very Happy

What makes you think there's something wrong? Having a bad feeling doesn't translate well over a forum. Darren

can't you feel and hear it too?

Laughing

good point.

its just the general poor driving experience and having experienced it working well and it needing a new gearbox, clutch and input shaft I'm happy that theres a difference between good and bad.

basically I'm get poor gear changes, very clonky, difficult to get the revs to match the transmission speed, poor pickup, noisy, rumbling when slowly down, vibration and between 53 and 55 mph in 6th

Given that you've had the handbrake apart recently, I'd take a look at that before deciding you need a new gearbox. Or have somebody else take a look. Darren

I agree. but to be fair the reason I took it apart was cos of the 'problems'. I thought I'd fixed it (not that I really did very much to it) but clearly not.

I just need someone local who knows how to pull it apart and rebuild confident that its right / working correctly.

oh the joys......

this and the weather means I'm gonna be back on the valium very soon. Big Cry

Haven't you used Ian at IRB before? Assuming there's some reason you can't take it to a dealer? Darren

I have but unfortunately he's a very busy man. (good for him - bad for me).

dealership...hmmm. its there Monday for my transfer box oil leak.

Its taken me weeks to pluck up the courage to take it to be honest I daren't push my luck and ask them to look at something else cos I just know something else will get fooked up in the process.

if it is the hand brake and hopefully thats all it is it looks like I'm gonna have to learn how to strip it down and replace it along with the hb cable too.

- like I ain't got enough to do.

Why not just undo the handbrake adjuster a couple of clicks (17mm socket IIRC), to really move the shoes away from the drum.

That will alleviate a lot of symptoms of gearbox/suspension/engine falling out etc.

Failing that, it's a LR defender and with all the will in the world, will never be uber smooth. 98% yes, but not "car" standards

If I was you, adamant there were issues and no confidence that your dealer could identify and fix, then I would arrange and pay for a specialist to inspect and prepare a written report for you detailing any problems.

You then have all faults identified and a course of action for your dealer.

Transfer box oil leak? Front or rear? If front then they might be removing hand brake drum and shoes etc: if it is the front transfer box/props haft seal!!! So they could make any problems worse or better. Whistle LANDYWATCH

thanks guys.

I have tried adjusting the shoes and you'll have to forgive me here but I'm not fully conversant with how the brake works. the left shoe at the top seems to be dragging on the drum and the adjuster is at the bottom so I'm not exactly sure the adjuster is going to help but I will give it another go thanks.

the indy option is a good one but I need to try and find someone local that knows what they are doing etc.

I might have to send my dad out on a mission for me......

regards being uber smooth I kind of know what you mean but that said I don't believe for one second the storys of defenders being like tractors. when mine is running right I believe its very smooth and certainly I couldn't wish for more.

Register on here, it will give you all the info you need to strip and rebuild every part of it. it may be best you do some of it your self considering the problems you keep having with it. it will save you a fortune in garage fees and time spent taking it their.

Re plucking up courage to go to your dealers, as you have said you have paid for warranty. If you have a problem ask them to look at it thats what your paying for. If you dont trust them the it does seem a waste of money buying the warranty you will never use.

have you had a chat with Mike at Land Rover, you have over 6 months of warranty left and I think you should make use of it, I also think your car should be going back to the factory for a whole new transmission, or total replacement, out of interest whom is your dealer and could you not use another (surely they cant all be the same), although I wouldnt recommend the 1 Ive used either. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy
