8" passive sub advice needed
i need to replace my old knackered 8" clarion sub.

the replacement needs to be 8" and round (fits in the top of my cubby box).

it will be powered by a jensen amp (that will just power the sub, other components powered by headunit).
the amp says 75 watts, 300 watts max and i have £100-£150 to spend.
i've been looking at JL, Focal and Hertz but i'm struggling to understand anything technical - ohms, voice coil etc.

all advice gratefully received

Your Amp then is 75wrms and 300w peak, it should be stable at an Ohm figure usually 2Ohm. If you have this info I'll have a look for you. Thumbs Up No Guts, No Glory.

Your amp will run at 4ohms unless your running it in parallel so go for a 4 ohm sub

2ohm subs usually come with twin voice coils so you can run your amp in parallel across the two sets of posts making it 2ohm which will be more powerfull but I like to not stress my amps so would run it at 4ohm

Edit: you need to check if your amp is recommended by the manufacturer to run at 2ohms before doing this

As others have said, mine is a 4Ohm DVC wired to be a load if 2Ohm for proper power rating for my system and Amp. To find out the rating it should be both on the Amp or Sub. If not quickly internet search it. No Guts, No Glory.

Just an added note all of the wiring options will or should be in the manuals for a new sub. Iirc a DVC 4Ohm sub can be wired to be a load of either 2Ohm (what I wanted) or 8Ohm
A 2Ohm sub wired to either 1 Ohm or 4Ohm.
Basically the Sub and Amp needs to be matched exactly to ever detail. Power rating can give or take very slightly but don't push it. If you can give me your Amp model I can do some searching for you. (PM) Thumbs Up No Guts, No Glory.

This'll do you, JL Audio 8W3V3, I've read good things about them. I've drawn up a plan to include two in the back of my car, just need the money to get them!

hi andy,
that was one of the 2 jl subs that i was looking at but i didn't understand the technical difference between the two.

on the base of the existing clarion sub it reads 4 ohms, 80 watts nominal; 300 watts peak.

so is andy's recommendation the still most suitable?
