Cheers - then I only have 3 problems remaining:
1) I'll need to make up new plates (as suitable ones are impossible to find for such a tandem) so I'll have to buy the right grade (hard enough) plate steel - any suggestions?
2) Will it really be strong enough to weld edge-to-edge (4mm thick)? Wifey and I aren't exactly light
3) Oh, how I wish there was a local engineering works around here - "hit-and-miss" sounds like good odds when trying to find a good welder in this part of the world. Problem is, I want a really neat job done...
If the answer to 2) is definitely "yes" and I can get decent plate, then I have a very clear plan of action Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
