Hi all
Does anyone know from what grade of steel bike rear dropouts are made? I have to make and braze on my own Click image to enlarge Cheers Matt Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

you can cut them out of plate but it will have the same problem as your current dropouts. The Axle in a geared hub naturally wants to rotate and if free to do so will chew away at the metal. A cast dropout or something replaceable would be your best bet in the long term.
Ceeway (http://www.framebuilding.com) have a huge range. Or have a look and some of the Paragon works dropouts. www.td5.org |

Many thanks for the advice guys.
I have anti-rotation washers that came with the SRAM hub (geared and braking) - hence the new direction for the slot. However, I'm worried that plate won't be hard enough on a torqued-up tandem, even for them. Ceeway look promising (great link) and I'll check out Ragley and Nukeproof as well tomorrow. Forgot to say - that was my idea too, until I realised the middle chainstay join had cracked (see photo), the whole structure was weak and I should replace the whole thing Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
