The play in the compressor shaft can nearly be as much as it likes as long at the compressor blades to not touch the compressor housing.

This is because the baring is oil fed and "play" is taken up when the oil pressure reaches the baring and "fills the gap" measuring lift on a comp wheel is not the test for a faulty turbo especially if the comp wheel is clear of the housings.

New turbos has some oil in the barings from build that is generally thicker than a use turbo with used oil in, some turbo places use Graphogen Assembly Compound when building them so this also takes up the gap on a new turbo.

thanks Pete.

guess I'll never know what the problem was with the turbo then as LR have told me that they won't be able to confirm what the problem was but are convinced the issue wouldn't have been present from the outset (without them knowing the problem not sure how they can be so sure the problem wasn't there from the start?).

I'm grasping at straws (again) here but I do just wonder if the wheel did make contact which was evident in the kangarooing which only happen a few times......when I first collected def and when the turbo failed?

?

I know (well I'm pretty damn sure) that everyone has had enough of me and my moans (and I don't blame you all) and I know many do / have thought I've been moaning about nothing but presumably the failures I've had confirm I've been right to moan?

does that make sense?

don't know?

did 4k rpm and then off the gas as I engine braked to island.....then back on the gas to go round island in front of car coming round island but no power / lim mode

but no mil.

wasn't until 2nd journey the following day did the mil come on?

don't know if / when it should illuminate just saying how it happened for me.

worrying thing is now (as per other post) I have the egr blanked off completely but no mil? yet as above the light works (or at least it used to)?
