Tough call that one, but even so, if it doesn't have to be approved, your insurance co. may think different? Craig Rogers

I believe that is classified as a commercial vehicle and hence does not legally have to use type approved towbar. Now can/will an insurance company require you to have fitted something that the law does not require? That is not a question I can answer. That is between you and your particular insurance company. My 1998 Defender is classed as a commercial van because it came out of the factory as a hard top (no windows and no seats in the back, ie. not a Station Wagon). It has had windows put in later and at one time also had seats in the back, but it still retains its 'hard top' identity.
As it is pre-2000 I pay the same VED as a same age SW though, so it is really only on newer post-2000 vehicles that checking what amount of VED you pay tells you what class it is. My 90 is also classed by the insurance people as a commercial van. The insurance company has access to a database which decodes chassis numbers and tells them if a vehicle is a commercial or not. I used to have mine insured as a private car until the insurance companies got this database. Now it has to be a commercial and I have to stump up about £100 more per year to insure it as a consequence! However, it does mean I can legally use a receiver hitch On older models like mine it doesn't tell you much on the V5C, and of course the body type may have been changed before your ownership, but the VIN number code can confirm the original classification. FirstFour have conveniently provided a decoding page to help you work out what your own vehicle is. http://www.firstfour.co.uk/products/land-r...nformation Our blog - http://landytravels.com/ Yorkshire Off Road Club - http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net |

This looks ideal. I cannot see this part on the web site mentioned; does anyone know of another source for it? I assume it isn't simply the plate but also the support underneath? |

AM94,
Contact Leeds, Brendan at 4x4 Overlander , and I'm pretty sure he will be able to supply, as I bought mine from him. Kit includes plate and support, plus ties to chassis. Other parts such as recovery pintle and drop tow hitch were extra. Worthwhile modification for my use. Good luck |
