Kangaroo!
When cold, my td5 doesn't half lurch around. For example, crawling along in 1st or 2nd in traffic, when I back off the throttle it is like turning off a switch and the throttle is instantly cut, no matter how progressively I back off with my foot. Once warm, all is well. Any ideas?

When you accelerate is it like there is no power then suddenly kicks in? If yes it's a knackered MAF.

New OEM maf fitted in August. Acceleration seems fine, it is when you back off that the fun starts.

Have you measured the fuel pressure at the regulator block inlet? Sounds like you are getting a sharp pre-injection fuel cut-off (or possibly even the main charge is dropping out suddenly?). If you have much less than 3.85bar pressure during normal engine running, then you have your problem. Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Thinking back on how mine has improved since I replaced the fuel pressure valve I now notice better idling characteristics when I back off the throttle say coming up to traffic lights or prior to a give way sign. It used to have a pronounced lumpy running feeling as if it was a petrol and the vacuum advance retard pipe was faulty. It may be worth keeping an eye out for one, I picked up my second hand FPR for a 15P engine for £13. With the amount of Td5's that are becoming more available through the breakers these type of parts are getting a little easier to source.

Thanks guys. Do these things leak as I have noticed a very small, intermittent leak from the bulkhead area under the car? It is so small I haven't even bothered to crawl under to find it yet! I just wondered if the two things could be related

When I bought mine I drove it back from the borders and the fuel pressure regulator was leaking like a sieve Rolling Eyes I wish I'd noticed it before I'd set off but I checked the defender over before the test drive then it started peeing it down so I didn't crawl back under (just had a quick look) but the rainbow river coming from underneath at the services we stopped at gave it away.

Yep, they can leak. Easy way to spot it is to look at where the convoluted covered wiring loom passes at the back of the head on its way to the starter motor. If it looks wet then you can pretty much guarentee that it's leaking from the FPV. If it is all damp and black from the underside of the rear sound cover on the back of the head then the semi circle part of the rocker cover gasket is leaking. In an ideal world the back of the head should be dry, dirty maybe but dry.

A leaking FPR is also a good cause for MoT test fail, and you won't earn too many brownie points from your local motorcycle lobby group Wink Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
