I have no problems with the ABS in combination with snow but can't you pull out the fuse of the ABS?
I know they do it in the dunes.

Using snow chains on the road is illegal in the UK isn't it?

Compulsory on the continent in certain areas but you'll get stopped for wearing them here. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
