For a moment there I though you were talking about my boss... he's in work every day but keeps a low profile! especially when there's work involved!

i bought an old original steering wheel off ebay, hacked the splined bit out of the middle (which turned out to be cylindrical) and got a local engineering shop to weld a flange onto it.
result is a perfect swap from old steering wheel to new with the addition of a quick release and no change in position from original. I used a cut down tomato puree tin for the back because it was the perfect diameter to fit in the plastic cowling. secured with epoxy resin and sprayed black (I think) it looks factory fit. tried to add a couple of pictures using the 'choose photos' button but to no avail |

I did exactly what you did too...^^^^ the aluminium cast boss was way too deep for comfy driving.
Some pics (thought I had more on photobucket, but not. can upload the pictures of what I did if you want more detail. But in short, it was get an old 4 spoke wheel, hack it to bits to leave the splined center core bit. Stick it in the lathe at work and turn it to a proper round shape. Then get some 5mm plate, cut a hole through the middle so the splined core would fit. weld it into place. then drill & tap the holes around the circumference to suit the steering wheel. I then welded on a thin bit of flat "strip" bent into a circle to cover the back of the flange.) ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge edit: just found them! ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge Better than this bloomin' great thing: ![]() Click image to enlarge in place: ![]() Click image to enlarge And it's now sat back in the garage as I prefered the larger 4 spoke wheel. |

It is odd we all have different length limbs and body sizes so nothing is perfect. I am have V long legs and the combination of Mud rails andthe standard boss = a comfortable seating position for me with the seat right back.
Perhaps I am the odd one! Your conversion looks first rate, anyone know where you can obtain centre pads for the Race wheel? BM52 |

Some things irritate me which is why when I did this that I went for plain holes and nuts on the back and marked and drilled them with the wheel in place to get the best alignment possible. The advantage of using nuts is that you can use bigger clearance holes to give a bit of radial alignment if you don't get it perfect first time.

The pictures on mine make it look like the holes aren't in a radial neat measurment, but they are. The last pic shows it more or less bang on.
I think i marked it when it (the boss) was in the lathe, so the radial line was perfect. |

Bolt on bits in Leeds sell a low profile boss, might be worth giving them a bell for measurements etc

If you're in town near Swindon at all, give me a shout. the wheel i've got isn't fitted to anything, so you can try it and see what the depth of the boss feels like
