We just refurbished both our boat trailer and ifor Williams trailer, new wheels, brakes, jockey wheel, lights. Cost about 800 for the pair but everything works smoothly and it's nice to be able to have confidence in something! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

The number of people (often white vans) you see flying along the outside lane with a beaten up old trailer with no plates or lights bouncing around behind is worrying. Cheers, David

Farmers around here have been known to tow a horse box along the roads with no tyres on!
 General attitude is oh well it's only along a few back lanes.. No Guts, No Glory.

Excellent guide to private towing, however it is perhaps a shame that tachograph regs aren't mentioned.

Although driving up the right hand lane at over the speed limit is inexcusable, if a trailer is small enough it does not need its own lights or numberplate. I'm sorry to say that I believe that this is one of the apocryphal legends and is not the case. As far as I am aware all trailers of any size require working lights and reflectors and must carry a number plate which matches that of the towing vehicle (including colour). If you can point me to primary legislation allowing exemption please do so! When you think of the dependence placed on number plates for road policing it seems inconceivable that there would be an exemption like this. |

Trailer laws are far to complex. I personally think that all drivers should have to have a test and all trailers should have to have lights. I tow most days and keep my trailer in good nick but you see some real dodgy ones, glad now they have to all be type approved so no more home bodges.
I am afraid it's the home towers that are the worse people doing 80 down the motorway with a Halfords trailer on the back and poorly maintained as said sat down the side of the house for months on end. The other day I got passed with a horse box and I was doing 75! It did show me how good the disco was towing it but not good. Tests however may take away the fun game of watching caravans reverse in campsites though and keep a few marriages together. |

I did my c1+e this year so can have an mam of 12tonne.
I learnt alot about driving properly. Nice to see people on here take towing seriously. |

Up to a couple of years ago I knew that trailers did not need lights or indicators providing that the lights on the towing vehicle were clearly visible from the rear, they did need to be fitted with reflectors.
I'm now retired and do not have access to the current construction and use regs but now that homemade trailers are outlawed (wish some of my ex colleagues were aware) most trailers are fitted with lights to the rear and in some cases white marker lights to the front if they are wider than a standard car width. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.
