I have ordered a Nakatanenga wheel carrier so will be able to give some feedback when I receive it. I like the idea that there were no holes to drill in the body of my truck and it opens with the rear door.
It has apparently been used by the Nakatanenga group on some of their overland trips. The only thing to be weary of is delivery time, I ordered and paid for mine end April and am still waiting. They have assured me it will be delivered by end August. |

Hi Doberman, what age/type of Defender do you want a wheel carrier for.
Also what do you want from your swingaway wheel carrier? Please note that some wheel carriers will not fit with the NAS step and certain aftermarket rear bumperettes etc. So pre or post 2002? Tailgate? 90/110 or 130? Basically no readily available aftermarket ones for 130 High lift jack mount or not? Oversize tyres or not? Finish? Powder coat, galvanised, galvanised and powder coated? Objections to drilling bodywork/rear door? Single pivot or not? For a 'standard' wheel carrier I would suggest the Safari Equip ones. These are made local to us (less then 2 miles away) so if you want a variation that we do not have on the shelf we can readily source them. Apart from being local I prefer them over other makes as they have grease nipples and larger mounting plates compared to other makes Single pivot ones reasonably readily available are the Safari Equipe one or the Nakatanenga one. We normally have both in stock, currently waiting for more of the Nak ones (will check supply situation during coming week) Of the two makes I prefer the Nak ones as that one has two swivel joints which takes up play/drop/misalignment more readily then the Safari Equip one. On our vehicles we have a modified 'standard' Safari Equip one, a single pivot Safari equip one and a Nakatanenga single pivot one. Any questions ask away. Brendan |

Hello Brendan,
Living in Switzerland, I ordered my Nakatanenga wheel carrier directly from them, but the delivery is taking time, I am hoping it will be delivered for hunting season which is just around the corner. One question I have for the Nak swing carrier I have ordered, is does it use all the screw holes in the rear door? Thank you |

Does anyone know if the Maxxraxx 4x4 bike carrier can be used on these wheel carriers?

Hi Kitoper, you need to remove the rear door card to access the 6 nuts holding the standard wheel carrier. The Nak wheel carrier uses just the two middle bolt holes in the rear door. I understand that there was a delay in manufacturing these units but I believe they are due any time now. I will check on supply situation during the coming week as I am also waiting on some.
Ray, since you are relatively close why not pop over and have a look yourself? If I actually get paid this month I might give you a bell and pop over some time this week for a couple of little bits and have a look at the wheel carrier while I'm there

Finally got my Nakatanenga spare wheel carrier fitted. 5 hours it has taken, with a whole load of teddy's thrown out of the pram. We got there in the end tho, it looks good but it needs slight tweaking but that is for sometime this coming week.
Thanks to Brendan (Leeds) or as he was called in another place Evil Git and the boss Barbara for the effort they have put in trying to get parts delivered. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |
