That's the place!

Think this was one of the adverts I saw

Just looks like a factory fresh Puma with a galvanised chassis on it to me...

Obviously I could be wrong, but it doesn't say 1985 One Ten to me, at all. No matter which of the many pictures I look at.

This has been happening for a while now after UK companies were buying old 90s and 110s and then tarting them up for a sale more than 5 times what they are actually worth (as with the company named). Most of these vehicles should even be IVA (SVA) tested before they are registred in the UK because that much tends to be changed.

The new tactic is to ship the vehicle over in standard (but roadworthy) state... pass all the legal stuff and then they get modified in country from parts shipped over in a separate ISO shipping container.

Sad to see one bite the dust, but GOOD!

This is illegal and many people have been making good money from this.

That's typical Daily mail, exadurating the story, "land rover crushed because it didn't have airbags"

errrr.... not true at all! crushed because it wasn't over 25 years old and was clearly rebuilt into a newer vehicle... you can even see the later type rover rear axle on it when it gets rolled over.

There seems to be very mixed reporting on this. For years East Coast Rover have complained about unscrupulous companies who have been bringing in ringed cars (the same sort of thing the members of this forum would flame an ebay seller for when they try to sell a hybrid)

http://www.eastcoastrover.com/imports.html

When I sent them the link to this news story they posted this in reply:

Quote:
"Nothing to like there. Jaguar/Land Rover North America said they do not want the older Rover vehicles on the roads in the US due to the liability they would/could face. Looks like they are trying to set an example."

Is this customs stopping fraud or a clamp down by JLR? Why would JLR feel liable for a grey import vehicle made years before the ownership of Tata, Ford or even BMW? Is there still a scepticism about Land Rover after the clampdown by BMW on the use of their name by independents?

Are there mixed messages here? www.td5.org

More like JLR just want to sell shiney new RRS's and freelanders to the US, and (typically) not be interested in the "old" basic naff defender. so they just wash theit hands of it.

It seems that they don't understand (or just plain aren't interested) in the amount of sales and interest they could tap into with Defenders in the US.
