That was horrible to watch. Why not turn downstream? Would that have helped, I don't know, never driven a river like that?

do you not think that watching a video in this thread that a newbie might think ' my 4x4 isn't invincible, maybe i won't cross a fast flowing river' ? i think its totally different to watching a camel trophy dvd as you are watching a group of trained and experienced drivers with a lot of support. |

Nature provided peril so that populations evolve to be smarter and fitter, since peril tends to reduce the stupid and unfit elements of a population.
I see a natural process taking place in that video! A harsh verdict I admit, and one which is not intended to offend. Far too much effort and expense is now directed towards protecting stupid people from predictable consequences, and "common sense" is becoming very "un-common" as a result. |

I entirely agree with you on that score. It wasn't their choice, no more was having at least one stupid parent. It's a tough start in life. One thing I would be fairly sure of though is that all present will have learned a valuable lesson, and at least (it appears that) all survived this time. I have to admit that another video I have always found tough to watch is this onewhich was doing the rounds some time ago. The anguish of the child in the soundtrack is profoundly disturbing. Another contender for the compulsory watching category, since it rams home the message that your stupidity has life-changing consequences on others. Notice the arm that is flung out of the vehicle just before it comes to rest. People must be encouraged to think about the consequences of their actions before taking those actions. |

The best lesson learnt is one through someone elses mistake!
not nice to hear the distraught boy on that video, blackwolf, but glad that parent had sense to make sure the boy got out before taking on the risk. having a new young family of my own i have a duty to be far more cautious than before; however this doesn't mean wrapping up in cotton wool but being a lot more considerate to the risk and consequence of my actions. saying that i did clock 48mph descending a local hill on my road bike last week with just a bit of lycra and giro helmet for protection  |

Kids dying is a very real possibility when doing a stupid stunt like that. Sadly, there's precedent for not being able to get them out of a submerged Land Rover in time. Fortunately, it didn't appear to be the case in that film, but that was clearly more from luck than judgement. Darren

A possibility, yes, but you're speculating on the fact that they may have been killed.
As for the stupid stunt they did, maybe they were just trying to get from one town to another. Check out this thread on the BAM road in Russia (be warned, you'll end up sat for hours looking through the 62 pages, but it's gripping!) Most of the roads are like the river crossing above... and the bridge that you see there, could well have been a railway bridge, where they're (As you'll read in the link above) often guarded by the military, so you can't take a shortcut across. |

Yeah, it would be great. I think bikes would be the way to go, as opposed to trying to drag a 4x4 through.

I'm sire I remember a thread somewhere about two Defenders doing this route, possibly linked from the D44 forum. Must try to find it.
I tend to agree with you that bikes are probably the way to go. Alternatively possibly something like a Mog.
