Transfer Box
Took my 90 into where our artics are repaired about 8 weeks a go for a clutch, the assumption was that the hydraulic slave had failed again as the clutch would not release, just kept driving and very hard to select gears. There was no way I was doing a clutch on my drive at home, I do most other things but gearbox out no.
As it so happens the hydraulics were fine, but all the springs have fallen out of the driven plate and were jammed down behind the clutch plate stopping it releasing.
While it was in I asked them to look at a transfer box leak and this was diagnosed as the intermediate shaft wearing its way through the casing as they do. We tried to get a recon box urgently while it was on the ramp but no chance. New box arrived from Ashcroft and has just sat on the workshop floor, the Land Rover just has not stopped the last couple of months racking up the miles, all the time the transfer box getting noisier and nosier on overrun and putting a ltr of oil in everyweek.
Took the box out Christmas eve and this is what I found with the cover off, it was still driving, not very well and banging a lot but still driving.

NOTE when your workshop says something needs doing they normally mean it, don't just leave it.
Anyway new box in and input shaft de rust dusted and splines greased, this was done about 2 years 100thiu miles ago and still gone rusty dusty but splines were ok this time not sharp pointy teeth. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
