Varta batteries always perform very well.
As regards standard wet cell, EFB or AGM types. If you don’t have stop start, or an alternator/ regulator setup for properly charging AGM’s, which I don’t expect you have, then I would recommend an EFB. In particular a dual purpose (start & leisure) battery if vehicle is left for over a week without use during winter months. EFB explained. https://www.varta-automotive.com/en-gb/tec...technology |

I'd also vote for Varta, it's the OEM battry supplier
In my Puma went for an AGM battery, no issues or compaints, starts perfect. Zaid-M www.DefencePhotos.com 2014 Defender 110 Utility, 2.2 Puma, Indus Silver Not just transport more like a religion |

perhaps a little premature to say for sure but my Yuasa seems to have come back from the dead.
having left it with only one croc clip on the battery from the charger for about 4 months it's come back to life hopefully get the chance to use it for a few days soon and confirm the situation. |

Whichever Battery make you go for, I.e Varta, Numax ,Yuasa etc I would check out Tayna batteries for a good price and great service. https://www.tayna.co.uk/
Irrespective of which manufacturer you choose the big decision is which technology you go for to get the best price / performance balance. Generally standard wet will be the cheapest, EFB next, and AGM dearest. Although AGM will perform well the issue is the standard charging setup in our defenders, including puma’s, are not capable of charging AGM batteries to perform at their best . I.e they won’t charge as well as in a vehicle designed to use them to their full capability. E.g a vehicle equipped with start stop and associated AGM specific charging capabilities. That’s why I like the EFB type battery as our defenders charging setup works perfectly with them and you get better partial charge and deep cycling performance than a std wet cell battery at not much more additional cost. Of course if you use your defender daily, do not have lots of additional power draining equipment fitted, or leave on trickle charge when not in use for a week or so in the winter a standard wet cell battery will perform perfectly well for many years. |

I’m also running Varta AGMs (in a dual configuration with Cyrix VSR and battery monitor) for a few years now. Works flawlessly with the Puma’s smart alternator and in temps ranging from Norwegian winters to Sardinian summers. Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭 |

Hi Angus Beef,
To my knowledge the standard defender alternator/ regulator setup is not designed / able to self adapt for optimum charging of AGM batteries, but very happy to be put right if I have it wrong. Note: The Puma’s do have smart charging, see video at bottom of this topic https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59852...or+voltage however I believe it has been programmed for a std wet battery and I don’t think it can detect that an AGM has been fitted and adapt its charging voltages appropriately. This is a good article on the challenges of AGM batteries with older Alternator/ regulator setups that are not originally designed or reprogrammable to cater for AGM’s. https://workshoppist.com/car-alternator-charge-agm-battery/. Articles like this are the basis of my opinions. But agin very happy to be educated if my understanding is wrong. |

Ian, thanks for all your links.
All I know is from my personal experience about what works best. Having flooded batteries fail on me, I would not go back. I assume you know that depending on the temperature it senses, the Puma alternator charges to 14.82 volts? AGMs have truly been up to the task. The only thing better would be going to Lithium with a DC/DC charger. Just my opinion. Cheers. Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭 |
