No, the salisbury isn't quite the same as a normal rover diff.
To adjust the backlash you need to remove the rear cover, unbolt the bearing caps, use a compressor frame thing to slightly squeeze the casing to release the diff unit. then shim it up, refit, measure, remove, re-adjust etc etc until the correct backlash is achieved. quite a faff. |

It's do-able at home; usually when the diff/casing gets worn, then the diff assy will come out with a couple of pry bars.
Obviously to refit it perfectly would need the use of a spreader or compressor, but a friend and I did my axle (when I fitted an ARB locker) with a huge G clamp he had. To fit the locker it was in fact easier just to remove the whole axle, access was waaay better then. |
