How to disable my 2010 2.4? Which fuse to pull out?
Hi there, slightly strange question but I'm taking my truck into the bush for a deer hunt this weekend and although I've never heard of any problems with theft, I really want to be extra cautious. I park my landy in a very isolated spot, then walk in to a remote hut about a days walk from where I park. It's cold, snow and ice about. As much as I would hate to have someone steal my landy, I really can't risk coming back to no vehicle three days later as it might be the end of me! Can anyone suggest an easy way to disable my vehicle - taking the appropriate fuse out ? Or is the standard alarm/immobiliser enough? ... if I take the wrong fuse out will it interfere with the alarm when I replace it... etc any suggestions would be gladly received!

You would have to remove or loosen the heat shield...

But if you unplug the crank sensor the Land Rover will not start... and will confuse most thieves.

Ian

Is that easiest to locate from lying underneath, or from under the bonnet?

I'm pretty sure from above but hopefully Ian (or someone) can confirm for sure.

The crank shaft sensor is situated under its own little heat shield. You will have to wait for the engine to cool down enough to unplug it. I think will be easier from above. (that little shield on my car rattles like mad)

If you go for fuses .. if the perp is smart, he will check the fuses and see there are some missing, he can then just jump them or use a fuse from another position.

Should you go that way, best would be to get some blown fuses / relays and put those in place of the good ones.

You could download the manual and check out which fuses / relays would be best to replace with defunkt ones.

Thanks for the tips guys - You make a good point Roamingman... although I think the risk is very low. Doesn't seem to have a lot apparent New Zaland traffic on this site, although I could be wrong. this might be my last post as this time next week I will have died of exposure. gulp.

No, because you'll be leaving the Long/Lat of your parking spot with at least two friends/relatives with instructions to notify the emergency services if you haven't called them both by xx:xx hrs on dd/mm date. I expect you'll also hide a stash of extra food, clothing and a more substantial shelter near there too Thumbs Up

Make sure what ever you do you put it in a location where you can push start the car, if someone does get in it they may flatern the battery just trying to start it.

Shame you have not got the BAS remap interface as I could have made a special NO TORQUE caliobration which allowed the car to start and idle but had a maximium speed limit of 5kmh and gave not torque upon accelleration. Though they may have got the car started they would not get far and at least would not flatern the battery trying.

Pete,

That is very interesting, I had in mind asking you if it was possible to do that! How much would you charge for an anti-theft, zero torque security map?

Why not just unbolt the ECU and stick it in your rucksack? that'll disable it!

If you could get a knackered ECU you could remove the whole guts out of it, and re-fit that in so the perps wouldn't think it was that causing the problem.

However, if you're in the middle of nowhere, and someone comes up to steal your truck, what's the likely that they'll just tow it away anyways if it won't start?

BAS - you are definitely on the shopping list. That would be a great feature to have along with the usual tuning files... and point noted about the battery. Quite a bit to consider when trying to disable! In the past I've always left an open gun case in the back and a few empty .308 shells lying on the seats inside in full view. That usually sends a clear message of who could be coming over the hill to catch them in the act.
