Nothing wrong with a towbar anywhere - put a reciever hitch front and back is good.
The only issue with some of these kit winches (winch in a bag or winch in a box) is the rating of them. Warn do a good removable tray that accepts certain winches and locates in the reciever hitch which can thus go front and back - i think they used this in the freelander on the last camel trophy. yep i have a winch tray which is designed to sit on a tow ball, have never fitted it as didn't have time to wire the winch up prior to the tunisia trip, and to be fair i think it is a great bit of kit. it's one of the only things i have left as i've sold up, and was just hinking when i was going to get around to selling it.
i'll see if i can get a pic of it for ya if you're interested? |

As for the winch
By far the best value is the TDS for David Bowyer @ Goodwinch http://www.dborc.co.uk/goodwinch/ Well impressed Just fitted one as a centre winch on the challenge truck,, Seen them pulling under water, very popular and successful as a rear winch on comp vehicles, California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

Is anyone a little concerned at the 3t rating of the towbar ball?
I remember someone on the disco owners club (new disco at the time) have a winch on the std towball and damaged it winching at not even full pull! Mike |

There is no problem doing a towball winch mount but rember that a tow ball is designed to have all its stress straight forward or back, so if you put 2-3 ton pull (easy to do when bogged in) at a 45 degree angle (because there will be minimal tow points directly behind) and the tow ball mount will be well overstressed. Also, where abouts would you mount the front tow ball? The bumper will bend with about 1/4 ton force. As advised above- if going down this route I would go for a 3" reciver mount Glyn |

TDS Goldfish from Bowyer gets my vote, bloody good value for money, work with synthetic rope (External brake) and pull like anything. We have run one for 2 years on the rear of our challenge truck and its been superb.
Mounting wise i ran a demountable cradle system for a std size (8000lb) winch that used a cl2 receiver hitch front and rear. worked well for what i wanted it for at the time. In fact its still in the garage somewhere, complete and is for sale. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Surely it's all about budget, I got a C9500TDsi Champion with full fitting kit and bumper for under £500 notes. This will work fine, not the fastest winch but very well built and reliable, this leaves alot of money left over for other kit. Now competition winching and daily heavy use is a different story. Most people buy a winch and use it half a dozen times a year. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.
