I understand his thought process. Green LR could be easily mistaken for mil LR if he's in the North. Things aren't so hunky dory over there as people are led to believe!! 110 D250 SE HT

We did the West and South coast in september 2011. Loved it! Great sceneries, not much really off road but a lot of small beautiful roads. Camping at lovely places near the beach with stunning views (weather permitting - see last photo
 ) !

I took my rag top Series One over to Connemara a couple of years ago - no problems. I often got asked if it was an 'Army' one, but mostly it just attracted people who wanted to talk about it! The only problem I had was getting charged too much on the toll parts of the motorway as the magic eye that measures the height of the vehicle and calculates the charge, kept including my spare wheel - so if you have one on the bonnet you might want to move it.

(I also had the stick on bullet holes on the drivers door as can be seen!) The Irish people are really a great bunch and friendly too, I am sure you will love it as the scenery is stunning! Ordnance Survey Ireland have an excellent series of maps at various scales, as good as the UK ones. Actually, maybe better, as they colour-code the terrain.

I am a regular visitor and love it over there. It is beautiful and unspoilt and the people are incredibly friendly. I do notice the lack of other Landrovers over there though.

Hi Big Wheels I live near Belfast and totally understand your question. The army LRs were a very common site on our streets but that stopped many years ago with the peace process. If you had an obvious MOD NI type LR (not a series model) then personally I would not drive it around certain areas of N.Ireland as you find some numpty who thinks we are still in the 70s / 80s (not very likely but possible) However if it is simply a green defender then I would not be the slightest concerned and you will get a very warm welcome North or South. Lack or LRs in the south is usually due to very high tax (unless commercial) but I may be wrong. |

I have visited the south a couple of times with 'Series' Land Rovers, and expected to see lots of others, which, disappointingly, I didn't. I did however see more than enough FFRR and RRS to last me a lifetime, the Celtic Tiger must still be going strong!
Going back to the West Coast of Ireland, I can recommend 'Rounstone Harbour' as a place to visit, and it was also featured in Monty Hall's recent TV programme, which also featured him driving around in a 110. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |

You will have absolutely no problems at all. It's a beautiful part of the world and the people are helpful and welcoming. I've lived in the SE of Ireland for six years and travelled in my defender to the Giants Causeway right down the west coast to the Ring of Kerry and onto Cork then back round to Wexford which is my home.
There is more interest in LR's than you'd think although they are kinda thin on the ground over here. I'm English and have encountered nothing but goodwill from the Irish people which speaks volumes 'cause we did grab their land and keep it for eight hundred years! |
