Starter motor packing in ? Mine would would do it mainly when after a run and it was warm. First thing in the morning or after work, it would spin nice and quick but not fire. Ended up with a replacement. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Never thought about that. It spins nice and quick but just won't burst into life
I hadn't been driving it hard last night and it showed no signs of being sluggish or anything. One thing was the fuel light was on but only just I've only had it a couple of weeks but so far it's started no bother at all, in fact it's started first time every time without turning over much either It seems as though it's not getting any fuel?! Beat me to it John
Starter sends a signal to the injectors, no signal = no fuel to run on. There could be a number of other reasons, battery on its way out causing immobiliser etc to play up - does the fuel gauge drop to empty when you crank the vehicle ? Immobiliser could have a fault. ECU could have a problem. Have you tried to purge the fuel system, could have a leak somewhere and got air into the system. Hmmm, if it was the starter would it not have been a bit temperamental?!
I'd have to double check but I in the fuel gauge drops to empty when it's turning over. What would that indicate?! Thanks so far Matt |

Starter will only send a signal on vehicle start up obviously, ECU will take over from there. If there has been an electrical failure in the starter it could be intermittent or just fail, depends what has happened.
Fuel gauge dropping to empty is a sign of a battery on it's way out. I have been ignoring this sign for a couple of months and not fitted the new battery I have sat here, almost a disaster because of this yesterday when winching I should add, the gauge will behave normally after the vehicle has been run for a while as there is extra charge in the battery. Also I thought the speed of the starter was checked by the Crank Position sensor - i.e too slow aint starting, no fuel. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Correct I guess the signal is a combination of the starter spinning fast enough for the crank sensor to say everything is OK to deliver fuel ?
I suppose the crank sensor and its cables would also be worth checking. Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

ECU is losing power when you crank, the fuel gauge is powered by the ECU try all your relay connections. It may also be immobiliser related. Sorry to add more things to think about. Edit: or is it the temp gauge powered by the ecu? |

I had a similar problem when starting mine, it turned out to be a loose relay beside the ECU. It maybe a long shot but make sure the connectors and wires around the ECU are not loose.

Also worth playing with the relays under the drivers seat. Thats what mine used to do. Cured by cable tieing it in tight, no problems for over 4 years

Thanks to everyone so far, great to get a response so quick after joining
I spoke to my local specialist today who suggested starting with the Relays under the drivers seat so he's got a couple for me tomorrow, said its pretty common and a cheap place to start Will see how I get on |

mine didn't even need a relay.First time, I tightened up the clips with a pair of nips. That worked for a couple of months, but then it came back. I then wrapped a cable tie around the offending relay and board and tightened up. Hey presto sorted about 4 years ago. Wiggle the relays first, whilst trying to start, if they click in and out (rattle) sorted. It could also quite easily be a dud relay. Or something else Let us know how you get on

Have you tried locking and then unlocking. My has had similar when it got confused and did not turn imobiliser off when unlocking it.
