Think it depends what guard you have I have the travall one piece that is identical to the early style of genuine land rover one. You have to remove 2 of the bolts either side that hold the roof on and fit two brackets behind the csw trim the guard hooks into these and then drill and bolt two brackets on the top of the wheel arch just before it goes into the rear load area. The guard is fixed to these using two long m6 bolts. Being one piece it's abit of a pain to remove and fit and takes some careful manoeuvring to get in and out.
