Wiper motor park switch
I need to replace/overhaul the wiper motor park switch on my RHD double-cab 110 (symptoms are the usual - the wipers stop immediately the switch is moved to "off" and behave very strangely indeed on intermittent).

Can anyone tell me please:-

1) Is the set-up on the Puma Defnder is essentially the same as the earlier TD5?
2) On a RHD vehicle is the wiper motor on the left or right of the bulkhead?
3) How much of the dash has to be taken apart to access the motor (and how does it come apart)?

I have the WSM for the TD5 but not the Puma (I presume that there isn't a manual for the latter unless you subscribe to the LR Global Technical Info scheme?)

Any advice would be gratefully received, thanks!

Have not done this on the Puma yet but a quick check would indicate that the side of the dash passenger side can be removed. The unit should be there. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

If your truck is a Puma, shouldn't it still be under warrenty ?, get a dealer to change it. Richard

I found this topic while looking for assistance on my vehicle wiper problems.

The Wiper motor on a RHD is indeed behind the dash on the passenger side.

To get access you need to remove the screws that hold the dash to the bulkhead. You do not need to remove the instrument cluster nor the speedo pod but need to slaken off the retaining screws.
You need to remove the grab handle and the top cover on the sort of glove box area in front of the passenger seat

I then levered by hand, the dash away from the bulkhead and wedged open with a short piece of 4 x 2. That gave me enough space to get to the wiper park switch and swap it out. The park switch is on the top of the motor which is attached vertically to the bulkhead and clearly visible

In all should take no more than an hour to do the job.

When putting the screws back in, put them all in, just enough to catch the threads on the clips, to get the dash lined up then tighten them, The ones on the underside of the dash can be a bit of a bind to get in but with a bit of patience should be OK Thumbs Up

I saved the relavent pages from the Tdci Puma manual into a .pdf format (the links below will take you to mediafire, just open or save the documents to your PC)



First you need to remove the dash panels


Then you can get to the motor

Mine also had the same problems, the dealer replaced the park switch in about 10 minutes while I waited (which included disconnecting the battery). This cured the problem.

Can anyone give me a hint about how to get the park switch off the motor with the motor still in situ?

It is possible to access the motor by unscrewing the dash and pulling it carefully forward, this gives enough room either to get one hand on the connector/park switch or to see what you're doing, but not both at the same time!

I really couldn't figure how how to get the switch off (I know that there's a spring clip holding it on) but whichever way I tried pulling it - in, out, up, down, left, right - it didn't want to come off. Any clues anyone?

I finally got around to sorting out my wipers today!

Firstly I can now confirm from personal experience that it is possible to remove the motor completely without taking the dash out, but it is a bit fiddly putting it back in again. With hindsight as it is not at all difficult to take the dash out (and only takes about 1/2 hour) it might be easier to do this. It is probably not possible to change the wheelboxes without removing the dash, but you don't have to disturb them to get the motor out. I chose to do it without removing the complete dash because I didn't want the hassle of removing the steering wheel and column switchgear, which has to come off to remove the complete dash.

In case anyone is interested, here's what I did (note this is a RH drive vehicle):-

1 ) Remove both wiper arms from their spindles (a small puller may be needed if they've been undisturbed for a long time)
2 ) Remove the centre panel from the dash (radio out, undo two screws, pop the four clips and pull the panel forwards, disconnect all switches and the clock, lay panel aside). If you want to avoid having to recode the radio, plug it in again and lay it on top of the dash (it will remember the code long enough to allow this).
3 ) Pop the LH tweeter out and disconnect the connector. Put tweeter aside.
4 ) Remove all the screws holding the dash panel to the bulkhead (on both sides). This includes removing the grab handle (you don't need to remove the thing that isn't a glove box though because those screws only go into the plastic dash) and the trim panel under the instrument panel, the instrument panel itself. If anyone is especially interested I can give more details about which screws to take out. The whole dash is now free and can move.
5 ) Pull the LHS of the dash forwards until you can see the wiper motor.
6 ) Remove the demister pipe to the LH side window outlet (one of those little plastic pop-in fixings to take out)
7 ) Remove the LH windscreen demister outlent complete with pipe (another of these plastic things).
8 ) Unplug the connector on the wiper motor.
9 ) Unscrew the nut securing the wiper rack conduit to the wiper motor.
10) Remove the two screws holding the wiper motor to the bulkhead, and remove the motor. The flexible rack will pull out of the conduit as the motor is extracted.

The motor can then be dismantled, cleaned of old grease (in mine the old grease had the consitency of soap), reassembled and relubricated, and a new park switch fitted (note if it is only the park switch needed you don't need to take the motor out - you can get to the switch at step 5 above).

Before I reassembled I lubricated the spindles until they could spin freely between finger and thumb, and as I inserted the flexible rack back into the conduit tube I applied generous amounts of Castrol LM since there was very little grease on the rack or wheelboxes.

As you reinsert the rack, it should pick up the spindles (you'll see them start to rotate), but if it baulks just have an assistant twiddle them from outside.

Reassembly is then the reversal of the removal procedure, but be advised that getting the two screws that hold the motor to the bulkhead in place is a bit fiddly since you have to hold the motor, the rubber pad that fits behind it, the stirrup that clamps it, the screw, and the screwdriver all at once in a confined space!

The whole job took about 1 1/2 hours, and the wipers are now much quieter and smoother than ever before. They no longer give the impression that they are going to fall off or conk out at any moment!

I wonder in the months since this thread was last updated whether anyone has any further experience of sorting the wiper park switch?

My wipers defo have this fault and I'd like to sort it without removing the whole dash. As mentioned above a stealership managed it in 10 mins which suggests there's a quicker way.

My post described remving the motor completely, it is possible to remove the park switch on its own by simply unscrewing the dash panel mounting screws and flexing it awway from the bulkhead. It is then possible to reach in and unclip the harness from the switch and the switch from the motor, though it is made more trickey buy the fact that you cannot see the switch with your arm in place. It can be done, though, and I suspect this is how the dealers do it.

I removed the motor completely to overhaul it, and also removed the flexible drive rack from its tube in order to grease it and the wheelboxes at the same time. You won't manage this in 10 minutes, I am afraid!

I've just had my wiper motor replaced under warranty, so fortunately I didn't have to pull anything apart. More interestingly though, the wipers failed with same inability to park symptom after a prolonged period of use, driving through torrential rain for about six hours on way down through France. Perhaps if enough people report the issue back to the dealers, a more permanent fix might be sought?

I have just replaced the park switch on my 90, symptoms were the same as everyone else had described except that the wipers stopped completely a couple of days ago in really heavy rain, made driving back from Dartmoor interesting!!! so I had no choice but to get stuck in and change the switch.
I must admit when I was reading all the comments others had posted I was a little daunted about doing this but to be honest it was quite easy just followed the directions Blackwolf describes, the switch slides off upwards towards the windscreen once you have disconnected the three wires and the little grey block.
every thing went back together ok once I lined up the dash with all the screw holes.
