I found some 750mm rails at £7.99 per pair, so not quite as long as I wanted, but for the price I'll give them a go.
http://www.solmer.co.uk/drawer_runners/ful...-h-45.html I have drawn (in Sketchup) my plan, first effort, so not brilliant. I need to adjust the dimensions to the exact sizes in the Defender and the items I want to fit, but its close. If I've done this right, here is my model:- http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/det...09a3873c84 Comments welcome, although I might not take any notice... Click image to enlarge cheers simon |

Looks promising Simon!
Do you plan to extend the top over the inner wheel arches?
You know I can't resist Personally, I would leave the drawers for the waffle boards out, for the occasional use they slide in this space easily, you'll gain some extra cm height room. May put them in strong plastic bags, to keep the mud away (guess how I know there is some brown sticky stuff in your area! ) BTW, did you find some time to process the photo's & vid's? Hi Vincent,
I think you're right about the waffle board storage, with only 750mm of extension on the runners I'm not sure I could get the boards in/out of the drawers anyway. I'll need to find some heavy duty bags to put them in. Re the videos, I'll work on them in the next few days. My PC with the editing software on is now working again, so can complete the job. I have seen those, but none come close to £7.99 per pair. What was the best price you found..? I'm going to try a pair of the 750mm to see if they work for me, if not I might have to look at the more expensive runners. You're woodworking skills are amazing, those dovetails are a work of art... there are so many different specs and load ratings the prices vary so much and to be honest i cant remember what i paid as i was more focused on getting the right specification.
Just check the ones you get have the load rating that you want and go for it. Cc |

Vincent,
I missed the answer to your question about the top extending over the wheel arches. I'm still considering that aspect. The drawers are higher than the wheel arches, and I plan to store our camping stuff down each side. Not sure whether to leave the space open or to put hinged/removable lids there. If I put lids there, no doubt I'll put stuff on top and then have to move that to get the camping kit out. I'll have euro boxes, tied down, on top of the drawers too. Cheers Simon |
