They are all different.
They are on a tapered thread, so if you did keep tightening, it would fall in. They do not need to be over tight, just nipped up. If you are convinced yours needs to be tighter, but may fall in, put some PTFE on it. Andy |

There not under no pressure at all so as Andy said they don't have to be wound in with a air gun do it so its flush with the diff casing and just so you get a nice little nip on it Ive seen a few now which are wound in but a screwdriver soon gets it straight again CSK Automotive

Usually the plug sits just proud of the diff casing to flush with the diff casing. If however your Defender has been serviced by a Neanderthal with biceps bigger than Schwarzeneggers thighs then it is definitely possible that the plug has been overtightened.
If the plug is loose then there are a few things you can do to make it stay in place, PTFE tape works fairly well, thread lock (albeit a small amount) also works well and then there is a dab of silicone gasket sealer which is really just a stop gap in an emergency. All of the above require the threads to be as degreased as possible. |

If it looks as though the plug is going to screw all the way through the Diff pn I'd be taking a look at the threaded hole to see if it's cracked due to over tightening

Ive put the plug back in, and it seemed to go tight,, so to make sure it doesn't move I've put a dab of white pen on the filler plug to see if it moves. 1999 Defender TD5 110
