Help needed - front propshaft broken off!
Hi all

Fortunately not mine, but buddy phoned me just now with apparently large problem. Stuck in field 30 miles away.

Td5 propshaft broken off at transfer box end! Can't engage high ratio although drives in low ratio ( propshaft rotates from diff end by the sounds of it)

Any ideas what might have gone wrong? I'm suspecting some sort of seizure in transfer box?

He's only had it for three days so a bit gutted obviously.

Need to sort out some sort of recovery now.

Ta

Which prop shaft has gone? Rear I assume? whichever it is front or rear un-bolt the broken shaft at both ends right back to the flange. At least then there can be no further damage from it moving around. Also it would then at least give front or rear wheel drive dependant on which has gone. As long as it's taken steady it should be okay as is. Hopefully both aren't damaged though! $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Not the high/low linkage seized or broken is it ? Can't see why that would break the prop but may explain why he can't get into high ratio.

If Hi range isn't available then it's only really a tow home job then. Confused $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Remove the front proshaft.
Jack up each front wheel to see if it turns.
If so, should be OK to attempt to drive or tow out.

That's what I suspected, but I'm thinking something more catastrophic to break the propshaft off. He's over New Milton way and it sounds like AA might be sorting out a recovery for the time being.

On the bright side if its a transfer box failure then it might be an opportune time to upgrade to a disco ratio one Thumbs Up

We,ll see what the AA man has to say.

Obviously if he does try to drive it after removing the prop he needs to have diff lock engaged to get any drive to any of the wheels.

Thanks for the replies chaps, turns out it probably isn't as bad as originally thought.

The UJ on the front of the transfer box appears to have collapsed which allowed the prop to come away. yoke on the transfer box is broken and spider had it. So tying to source parts for it today, hopefully its possible to buy the front yoke an spider as separate parts instead of a complete prop!

The lack of drive in high range turned out to be user error Whistle as a new owner he was having trouble selecting high range, thinking it was a 'normal' type of gear box! So hopefully thats all going to be ok - we'll see.
