Any Ham Radio operator?
I just wonder how many Amateur radio operator.

I use a FT857 that give me the flexibility that i need.

I realize that most of the people use CB around here wich is not too bad as seem to be not as saturated as in other areas.

as a curiosity last month in 11 meters i have a clear conversation with a guy in tenerife 3000 Km away, the interesting on this its that i was using the defender from my driveway.

Cheers

Another one here, use it for possible emergencies/ chatter when out and about.

I wish I could be posh with a FT857 but due to it being a tool rather than a hobby I am just running an Icom IC-207h.... at least it lights up green to match the dash colours Cool

The IC 207h its a good piece of equipment, and if you do not use HF at all its just perfect.

I havent got the time to dedicate to the radio as i used to do, now its just for travels.

I am posh??? Shocked

Yeah, the Icom does everything I could want it to do, and more. I paid about £200 for it a couple of years ago and that was a bargain then when it wasn't an antique. Where the FT857 seems to go for big money even second hand- I have looked at them every now and then but the price never drops- They are an awesome piece of kit though when mated to the antenna matching unit..... I just cant justify the spend Sad

I am thinking about adding a separate HF unit, but in the past I have also had unlocked CB which covered the necessary HF band. When that died and I moved onto normal CB until I moved here where they aren't used at all so sold it on. I guess I will probably spend a little more time listening over the coming months when travelling so might get bit by the bug again Smile

Hi Didot
In my old puma I had it initially installed the front display in the cubby box and the main unit under the cubby box along the inverter and the ITX computer, I changed this for three reasons

1 My son use the cubby box as a corridor
2 a failure attempt to cross a mini river almost reach this area
3 when transmitting with 100W in HF re-start the computer

and now in my TD5 I install it in the roof console along the microphone, so no need of mike anymore, and the main unit its in the back of the car, all clean no cables around anymore.

Also HAM, but not active for sime time. I have FT857 in Disco2 TD5 - display in front, radio in the back of car. And 2 antennas - 1st for CB or ATAS120 and 2nd for VHF and UHF. And it is very usefull also on CB - in mountains the 100W power is sometimes the difference between contact and no-contact.
I have never had any problems with car an HF from radio. On the other side, it is not so good - the TD5 engine management is not wery quiet on HF bands.
Now I'm prepairng Def130 - from HCPU to Wagon and I will use th F857 or simillar radio again. But I will mount the radio a bit higher, than is the floor lever. Jus for the case of some watter inside. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I'm an Amateur user via Raynet (Radio Amateur's Emergency Network) and I also use radios (both Amateur & Licensed) when I'm assisting in a number of Charity Endurance Challenge events mainly up here in Bonny Scotland. I use a couple of radios from Yeasu & Kenwood together with a Yeasu vx5 that I was using today. I don't rally use them for chat though.

I've a Yaesu FTM350AE in my 90, that I use for 4x4 Response. The display is mounted on the top of the dash, and the radio body is on the bulkhead behind the drivers seat. Photo of dash top in my thread in the 'My Defender' forum, link in my siggie. Mark S
