Hi
As previously posted I picked up my 110 11 days ago. Here are some of my thoughts and the issues I have with it; 2 separate oil leaks, 1 front and 1 rear, causing 6 oil spots on the driveway (within 10 mins of arriving home on the first day) 58 miles on car when collected from dealer Rear seat nearside scuffed Paint missing and BADLY cracked in rain gully above rear door and paint cracking in several other places around the rain gully. All seats (leather part) lost have lost their brand new look (been in another dealer showroom for a while) Scratches underneath several doors caused by shoes Rubber on side steps appears worn and rub marks on black paint Rust on all mudflap bolts and washers Rear step rubber condition appears worn Scratches on rear load door and bottom hinge also chips under rear load door Paint splitting on all door hinges (around bolts) some slight rust Rust on bonnet hinges due to a rubbing misaligned bonnet and behind the hinge mounts on the bulkhead Front bumper not aligned properly Small areas of rust on the chassis Paint chips on drivers side B post (inside) Stone chips on front Front grill paint missing (black plastic showing through) Wear on carpet edges both drivers and passenger side Near side interior B post trim loose 2 seat belts are slightly frayed Been touched up on bonnet edge and under nearside wing mirror Rear offside door doesnt close very well Scratches in seat belt connector drivers side Mud underneath lumps in chassis hollows Interior poorly valeted Covered in dust and bits Several minor digs in cubby box Several marks on dash Marks on headlining and a few minor digs Scratch on perspex cover over instrument panel Offside rear door panel lifting (inside) Scratches in black paint around rear window surrounds Headlamp surround trim starting to rust Touch up on roof above drivers door Rust under bonnet around bonnet stay 2 holes in carpet back of rear seat (offside) Scratches and paint missing around drivers seat adjustment handle Drivers door panel has minor marks Minor scratch nearside rear door Drive train clunks when changing gear Paint missing on roof above middle of windscreen?? Paint chip on top of A post offside Carpet that covers the box area under the drivers seat slightly worn Some seat bases have dark marks in the fabric. Shows in some lights. Now I am about as fussy as it is possible to be, so some issues maybe fine to other people. When I ordered the vehicle, I'm sure I was told they already had an order in with the factory for the same vehicle and spec etc. Although when I collected it I was told it had come from another dealer and may have been in their showroom for a while hence the various cometic marks. At first the dealer told me not to worry as they would sort out any issues with new seat coverings and carpets etc but as I've noticed more and more marks I feel that I've had a used car. The dealer has now agreed to swap it for another new 110. Although because of problems like the rusting bonnet and door hinges, paint issues around the rain gully and especially the drive train clunk, I'm thinking twice about having another 110. Obviously everybody on here is aware of the huge amount of problems that you MAY have on delivery of a Defender and I am wondering if I can be bothered with all the grief. Especially as the above issues are just minor ones. The dealer has also made me another offer. I can hand it back with no financial penalties and pay the extra for a Disco 4 3.0 GS. The GS would do me fine as I don't want all the other toys. As far as I can see the benefits of having a Disco 4 are; - The amazing new 3.0 engine - Hopefully no Defender type paint and bodywork alignment issues - No drive train clunk - ........Thats about it Negatives of having a Disco 4 - Not so good looking (IMO) - No character - It would feel more like a car than a mate - Its not a Defender I love the Defender. Apart from the drive train clunk (and my issues above) it's awesome. I've got to let the dealer know my decision by the morning so what do you guys think ? Or is that a daft question ? Regards Marcus |

Well Sully, I think when you buy a new car, you should get a new car, I would not call the car you have new, sounds like an ex-demonstrator to me!
The D3/4 is a very different beast, in context I am longing for a 110 CSW and have done for years, but 18 months ago we bought a D3 and I am now having trouble finding good reasons to have both on the drive, we only need one large car. Plus stories like yours really really put me off. But if I don't jump in soon they will be gone forever, and in addition the VAT goes up next Jan as well as road tax in March 2009 for first year. The D3 is a great vehicle, but it really comes down to not having the character that the Defender does, and its a lot more expensive to run and modify. We just put new tyres on ours, the Pirelli Scorpions that are OEM fit last about 23K miles and are £160 each (best price) - check out defender tyres and its a lot more economical. If you want winch, split charge, roof rack etc its going to cost you a lot more, and be a lot harder to integrate than a defender. I put split charge in ours no problems, but all the panels are more like a car with clips to break, than a defender which is essentially a 1970's fit and finish! It really depends what you are after and what you plan to use the car for. Disco is less "tough" in terms of look and cosmetic toughness, but Defender is no where near as defined. You really need to drive both back to back to feel the differences. don't think Disco is weedy though, had about 400Kg of gravel in the back the other week, and the old lawn (in its entirety dug up as turf) on the way to the tip. The lay flat load space area is very large and easy to use. The rear seast fold into the floor and are a much better solution that the rear seats in the CSW defender etc. Hope you manage to sort something out with dealer. Sounds to me very much like LR don't want to sell you a Defender doesn't it! Still the local dealer was really not interested in selling us a D4 when we went in to ask about trading up our D3! Maybe they don't need to sell any models... (quick edit for my inability to type and listen to mind numbing conf call) |

Mine was a six-month old ex-demonstrator and in much better condition than that - I'd swap it for a new 110 (hopefully odds are that you can't have two that bad). Peter

Mine was an ex-showroom model. It came with a few scratches and scuffs but is pretty sound all round.
Some of the problems you describe (rusting light surrounds, misalignment of panels and bumpers, doors that aren't adjusted properly...) are just part of the Defender and aren't due to it being ex showroom. In fact, if anything, some of those things get sorted out more quickly in the showroom models than those sat in a field awaiting customers. You obviously have a keen eye for detail. You were right to send that one back (damage is unacceptable) but you won't get anything perfect. HOWEVER, ask yourself how it'll feel in 18 months time. Mine is covered in more scratches, more dirty marks, has my son's biscuits trodden into the seats, has had lengths of wood balanced on the dash, has been filled with garden waste and has been knocked about in car parks. If I had a Disco, I'd be gutted and it would definitely take the shine off my ownership of it (no pun intended). As for the Defender, it just makes it feel more like mine! Don't be put off. By all means make sure you get a good starting point - one commensurate with the vehicle - but remember a Defender is for life, not just for 2 years (unless you're Sonic3D)! One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

I've been curious by your silence since your original post. Either you'd driven off the dealer forecourt and gone on a round the world adventure with your new toy; or things were going wrong for you. Very sorry to hear its the latter.
I'm a perfectionist too so know exactly where you're coming from . You've obviously got a shop soiled one and the mileage on delivery - WTF . I'm new to this forum and new to the LR brand - i will be taking the plunge next year. I've been round quite a few dealers recently and have seen a few defenders in showrooms which look marked due to carless potential buyers. Saying that, Guy Salmon in Stratford had a black 110 Utility in their showroom a few weeks back which was straight and mint, and i mean mint - so there's no excuse. Its good to hear that your dealer has given you a couple of options to consider - at least that's a positive. If i was in your shoes i'd give a Defender a second go making it quite clear that the one you get has your name on it all the way down the production line - and i'd want and improved deal to reflect time and touble/emotional stress etc ! If you go down the D4 route then fantastic - they look stunning but i'd always be thinking "what if". Despite everything you read, i'll still be going for a 110 Utility in the new year. Can't explain to anyone why aside from the fact that i've always wanted one - and that's good enough for me. I'll be expecting the worst and hoping for the best - and god help them if i get a 5hite one Good luck, whichever way you go |

Sorry to hear problems that some of you are experiencing, but thought I should say that they are not all dogs out of the showroom. Had mine a month now. Spotless on delivery inside and out, apart from polish residue trapped in the odd moulding corner where it's obviously been thoroughly valeted prior to hand over. No rust anywhere that I can see, even underneath, though paint on chassis is only just enough to cover it in places. External paintwork unmarked and practically no misalignment on bodywork. Did adjust rear side door slightly ourselves rather than haul it 80miles back to dealer as it was just catching on the roof rack bracket above it, 5 minute job. Not that the doors fit as good as on an automated production line of a car anyway . But good for a defender apart from that one door. No oil or water leaks (so far). Performance of first 2500miles faultless. Conclusion, I have been fortunate and/ or the dealer (Likes Landrover,Brecon) have done a thorough pre-delivery check and sorted it. As previous comments it isn't going to stay perfect for long with the way I use it, but nice to start with it right and its me that makes any mess. Have already set the alarm off accidently once by forgetting that I now have an alarm. its a defender, they're not supposed to have that kind of technology !! 1981 series 3 swb gone 1986 v8 110 station wagon current 2009 puma 110 xs utility station wagon latest addition |

Sully,
I agree with TallPaul, if you order a new car you should get one . But a brand new Defender straight off the line will have some of these issues as well. I know its not right but we all over look these little issues and have a defender for what it is the Best 4 x4 By Far . IMHO If these little imperfections annoy you, then the Defender is not for you. Go for the Disco 4. N. |

It has obviously been used on test drives even an off road day by the sounds of it,but it is still deemed new up having 100 miles on the clock, check which ever you go for before commititing yourself. 2.4 90 XS

Hi
Many thanks for all of your replies. I took it back to the dealer today and ordered a Disco 4 Despite of all the problems I'm already missing it terribly. My decision was made much easier as I have decided next spring/summer time I will get a Puma 90 station wagon or utility. So roll on next year I say Obviously I will still be lurking around the forum and many thanks again for all your advice. Cheers |

I'm picking up my brand new (hopefully!) 90 CSW tomorrow. Is there anything I should particularly look out for before accepting it?

My first Defender, that was replaced by Yeovil, also came from another dealer. It had a lot of the problems that you had with yours with the addition of not being sprayed properly and a dent in one of the wings. I am sure the original dealer had been taking parts off the vehicle to repair other Defenders. The replacement vehicle from the factory was a lot better, apart from paint missing and panel fit. I think the moral of the story is ONLY accept a vehicle that comes from the factory ! Bob |
