Sudden radio interference
Help requested:

Turned on my radio this morning (LR Puma issue) and there was loads of crackling and interference. Still there tonight.

I haven't driven the 110 for a few days and the last thing I did was scrap the reverse park sensor. Only electrical connections were to the reversing lamp and I encased those cables (individually) in resin (where the insulation had been cut by the connectors).

The aerial is standard LR telescopic and I have checked it is screwed down and earthed. If I unplug the aerial cable to the radio, it goes quiet (no crackling).

The reversing lamp works fine (no short) and besides, if all lamps are off at the back how could its cables interfere?

Can a telescopic aerial "break" inside? Wobbling the antenna doesn't make it worse.

Any ideas, however bizarre, most welcome. I'm fresh out of them Sad

Ta very much,

Does the crackle change pitch at all with speed or load?

No... but I just took the radio out to check all the cabling again and hit (or rather "dropped") it a bit and now the crackling has stopped. Dry joint perhaps Rolling Eyes According to the label, the radio was made in Mexico in 2002.

I'm thinking another warranty issue Evil or Very Mad

Cheers guys

From another thread now it makes sense. I forgot you put the Kenwood in the other car. So you've just got the LR unit with aux in I guess NEVER SURRENDER! ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

My one crackles when the air-con is on, could it be that, something you've switched on?

Don't think so - I've fiddled with everything. Wife thought I'd lost my marbles when I asked her to listen to the radio and put the car in reverse whilst I crawled under the rear mudflap Shocked Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Do you have another radio you can plug into the Defender so you can eliminate the radio as the cause? I had this in the wife's Golf and assumed it was the radio itself. Changed that and problem persisted but after a while it cleared itself so I'm none the wiser, other than knowing at least it wasn't the radio unit itself that was causing the issue.

The other thing you can then do is disconnect the aerial at the retractable aerial end and radio end and run another cable from the radio to the aerial - that will eliminate another section.

Both good ideas I will try tomorrow - need to savage wifey's car again for the Kenwood HU (useful in so many ways Laughing) and find the spare aerial coax cable (will probably have to botch the connector) I have somewhere in the boiler room... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
