It's not legal I believe, due to EU regulations saying that all seats need a proper seatbelt, and not a lap belt.
It can be done though, the old Tdi's we had in the past had the centre seat. Fine for short journeys or short people, but a bit tight on a long run. I've seen Pumas with a side facing seat in the back though, so it can be done, a pedantic police officer might take an interest though. Strangely the V5 said my Defender had 3 seats (mine was a 90 Hard Top too), but only had the two. I was going to put a bench seat in the back (for very occasional use), but never got round to it. Still not 100% legal though... |

Go for the exmoor trim forward facing child seat and place in the rear. Tested to all current legislation. You will need the seat belt kit at an additional cost, but it is the only safe way of adding a seat. I have a 3 seater hard top, and the center seat is for the wife when we all go out. even with the 3 point belt supplied by exmoor, it is not suitable for a child (as informed by Exmoor themselves). My H/T states its a 5 seater on the V5, so that means they include the wheel arches as additional seats !!!! Would not use them on the road, as not really fit for purpose. Someone like NFU will insure you for the Exmoor trim seats- You need to declare them as it is considered a modification.

Bloody shame I say. Some of my best memories as a kid involve being thrown about the back of a 109" with no belts whatsoever due to enthusiastic driving
And then when at college being 12-up in a 110CSW when going out on site visits, good fun - if a little cramped! Even better when you get off the road, then it's really hard to stay seated! |

FYI, All forward facing seats for these age Defenders must have a 3 point harness.
It is perfectly legal to retrofit side facing seats in the rear load space of a Puma Defender, with or without seat belts. Cheers Steve |
