just wondering (well might have an alteramotive)....
had a 'new' gearbox fitted and wondered how you can determine if its new or reconditioned? just so happens that 2nd gear isn't the easiest to select? hmm. its still running far better than it has ever done before (however I've still got reservations about it all). |

With the greatest respect, have you ever considered a nice reliable Toyota? Darren

no.
if i was gonna buy a toyota might just want to buy a honda any one of several other characterless vehicles. just cos the defender is bolted together by what would sometimes seem like careless individuals there's no good reason that I can see why any of it should be unreliable - certainly not for the first couple of years. as with most of us on here we've bought it cos its capable of performing a certain task or cos of its construction methods it can be tinkered with (I fall into the later mostly). so far as I'm concerned I just expect the bits its made up of to work (as I would with any other new vehicle) - I don't expect it to be the comfiest, smoothest, quietest or most ergonomically designed vehicle......if that was what I expected I'd probably be looking to replace it for a Toyota - if it is a recon box should I be concerned and would I have a cause for complaint (obviously I bought a new vehicle and expect it to have new parts?)? |

I 'think' its all sorted and hopefully with time 2nd gear will sort itself out but IF it doesn't I'd like to know whether they've stuffed a recon box or a new one. |

Possibly they even stuffed a reconned recon box You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I have a feeling that I read somewhere that dealer supplied replacement boxes were manufacturers rebuilds?

There's no reason to be concerned. Even if it is a recon box (which I very much doubt) then the whole point of reconditioning is to return whatever it is to factory specification. If done by a conscientious specialist then it may be even better than factory. Of course, if done badly then it could be worse but I can't see how using 2nd rate reconditioned parts would be in their interest, particularly as I gather they've extended their warranty. As for having cause for complaint, if it were a recon 'box and it failed then undoubtedly yes. However, if it's working exactly as specified then I sincerely doubt it. As an aside, reconditioned major components are nothing new in the auto industry. For some years it's only been possible to buy recon DII steering boxes, for example, and many years ago some manufacturers provided 'gold seal' engines, which were essentially factory reconditioned. Your new 'box probably just needs some time to bed in - it is new after all - but you need to give it time and miles to do so. Also, have you driven any other Puma's? I haven't done so myself, but it's entirely possible that yours is completely normal. there's gonna be sleepless night for sure regardless of the g.box as I'm worrying how I'm gonna get a cab heater installed LRA as you say probably just need to give it time......I'd very much like to drive a similar car - and would hopefully confirm my car is indeed now as it should be (I hope). |

Stay cool, change gears with respect for the mechanism, meaning nice and slow, without putting any pressure on the gearstick to do things faster than it wants. That is how I drive all the time, and works very well. You are not driving a GTI eurobox you know You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I've probably driven a dozen Pumas so far and none of them have had a smooth change into second.
I did find the problem eventually after getting the TD5 - my driving style Going into second on the TD5 is notchy to say the least. If I short shift into second and make sure the revs drop the change is nice and smooth. I tried the same on the 110 before I sold it and the change into second was easy. Basically I just use first to get going and get into second as soon as possible. I got a recon box for my 1989 90 and its been faultless, very smooth and quiet so even if it is recon it should be better than the 'Duff' one.
My old one was shipped up to Brum and bunged in a Puma I believe Hope it works out ok this time round. Dj 1989 200tdi 90 csw 2011 110 usw Orkney grey Buy British 🇬🇧 Defender Clothing Designs available at http://www.rangesports.com/acatalog/Defender-Stuff.html |
