After my experiences with Disco 2 steering boxes "reconditioned" by LR I would avoid anything that LR had reconditioned like the plague.

You can imagine a recon box might be put together with more attention to detail than the originals being churned off the factory line (like your original).

I shouldn't imagine anything else.

As for second gear, I usually pull away in second to avoid the dreaded 1 - 2 change. That being said, I had other troubles with my gearbox (especially 3rd) since new (2 years ago) but a combination of changing shifting style and maybe the gearbox bedding in has made it acceptable. It'll probably last as long as the other mortal parts... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I had a recon box from Land Rover, the gears were in the wrong way round Shocked Went like fook in reverse especially in sixth. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.
