2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Aintree Green
ZU Rims and BFG wobble -Eureka!
New ZU and BFG AT combo wobbling badly at 50-60 mph. Checked all bushes, balanced twice, replaced steering damper. It just got worse. After the second trip to the tyre shop (recommended for being the best) my wife could feel the vibration sitting in the passenger seat!

I took a wheel off to check a hub. Couldn't be bothered to drag my compressor out so used wheel wrench. Once loose I noticed that if I rotated the wheel the nuts came off with my fingers easily at around 4 and 7 o'clock. Idea Hmmm, I thought.... There was about 1-1.5mm of movement as I rotated the wheel so I did all the nuts up finger tight constantly turning the wheel before cranking with the wrench. Repeated this on the rest, having to clean out a bunch of swarf from one wheel that had obviously just been forced on with an air gun.

I spoke to ZU who said that they cannot really control the thickness of the powder coat but had to allow a certain tolerance for it. Maybe the coating on mine is very thin? They also said they have had a problem in the past with after market wheel nuts. My 110 is an XS, I assume my nuts are genuine.... (fnaar fnaar)

Anyway, the upside is there is now NO wobble.

That is probably the cause of your wheel wobble. Chances are they did not do all the wheel nuts up finger tight first so that the wheel is correctly centred, then tightened up to the correct torque setting.

Now I would guess the torque setting on the rattle gun was set to F. T. Setting.

Have you asked what the torque setting on rattle gun is? Have you asked them what the torque setting should be?

It can be amusing when you hand them a torque wrench set to the correct torque Razz Rolling with laughter

With any coated wheel new or refurbed always ream the central hole and the nut holes make no exception

We then zip them up to hand tight then torque bar to the correct Nm

i always get the tyre fitters to finish off with a torque wrench - and watch them do it - gives me a warm feeling and double checks that every stud has been tightened properly.

I once sat in a car (passenger) and watched one of the wheels come flying past on the Hammersmith by-pass Rolling Eyes

Had exactly the same combo and the same problem.
I Replaced almost everything in the car and the wooble didnt stop.
Finaly i noticed that the wheel nuts are about 1-2mm smaller in diameter then the zu holes...
I made a bracket and placed it inside the wheel nuts hole and inserted the nuts insite and the wooble stopped.
the nusts are just too small for the zu wheels...

No. Standart Nuts are for steel wheels, the zu rims are alow and need cones as nuts. the nuts are from britpart

IIRC standard LR nuts for alloy wheels work with Zu wheels - could be wrong though ... John

Yes, that is why I said that the standard LR nuts for ALLOY wheels, such as the ones supplied with Boosts work with Zu wheels. Thumbs Up John
