Never heard of such a thing happening....
However...I've heard of side shafts snapping due to excessive wheel spin on the older non-TC Defenders. As soon as the wheel touch the ground/get grip again the side shaft just let go.....BUT..... ......that means that TC will actually prevent this by braking that wheel before it will build up excessive speed. So no.....it will definitely not break anything! |

Thanks. That does make sense to me! Maybe he had mistaken this for the situation you described.

Yes. In Morocco 2 years ago, front diff blew on Sonic's 110. In 2008 Andrews blew the front diff on his 110 in the sand. On both occasions the vehicle was drivable after removing front prop, removing driving flanges from hubs, fitting pot noodle cartons over the hub end, and pulling the TC fuse. Both vehicles then drove in 2wd. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Just a bit off topic but why the need to pull the tc fuse? As the wheels aren't driven they're not going to spin so not engaging tc. I recently had to drive a couple of days with no front prop and had no issue with tc, it did work on the back axle when I had to drag a car out of a ditch. I left mine connected as I didn't want to disable the abs.

From experience on friends trucks, this does indeed happen and the more aggressive the tyre, the more likely so it is. That is to say if you're spinning a Simex Extreme Trekker, it's more likely to suddenly grip harder than a BFG AT. Andy. |

Referring to Gareth's post. We were is sand so when pulling away with just rear wheel drive the system got confused and applied the brakes. We could not understand why this was so we simply pulled the ABS/TC fuses under the drivers seat. This for whatever reason allowed us to continue out of the desert and all the way back to the UK.
I have seen rear half shafts break on TC equipped vehicles when climbing up steep muddy inclines. I presumed that it was the very basic TC applying the brakes to a spinning wheel that caused this to happen. |

I agree 100% And also....I really do not see TC breaking a diff No way....... like I mentioned, maybe it can break a side shaft but a diff I doubt. Might be wrong though but have never heard of such a thing? |

Didn't you just took of to quickly then? It means that your rear wheels where spinning! Last year this time I did a trip through the Namib desert. It was 700km of massive dunes without a foot of tarr for those 6 days and did not have one second where TC stoped me from climbing a dune, etc....I think it is a system that works just perfectly! P.s.....wasn't there a change in the system somewhere along the line? |

Didnt matter how we took off the thing would go no more than 10 feet and grind to a halt. We tried and tried to get going it just would not have it We got people watching the wheels as we tried to move this is when we spotted that the brakes were being applied. The vehicle was a 57 plate 110 utility. Pulling the TC/ABS fuse got us going.
There is a post all about it somewhere. |

I remember talking to the guys at Kankku in the Lake District, they used to disable TC on the Td5 90's as they found they were snapping half shafts on the rocky terrain. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"
