England 1987 Defender 90 Other SW Bonatti Grey
T’was the day before Christmas eve
T’was the day before Christmas eve and we were travelling up the M6 Northbound roughly 50 miles into a 75 mile journey to see my niece get married with two hours to spare thinking all was okay travelling about 65mph.
When suddenly ‘she’ my 1987 90 lost power going uphill for a split second then there was an almighty bang underneath, followed by a continuous rattling until I had pulled up on the hard shoulder to investigate. It was'nt raining too badly so I lifted the bonnet expecting to see a meccano set ready to be built up!
I looked over everything inside, outside and underneath expecting major damage somewhere and was ready to call in the tow truck, but there was nothing at all that was obviously wrong.I started ‘her’ back up and everything was absolutely normal on tick over so after a minute I put her in first gear and thought ‘lets see what happens’ but there was the crunching noise again after moving two feet !
So she moved that two feet and the engine is still ticking over ~ what’s the (blank) problem I asked myself! I lit another cigarette and thought ‘it’s not the clutch because she will still move slowly’!
Has ‘she’ slipped out of high range with the vibration? Let’s give it a try I thought but no I didn’t work. Then just don’t ask me why but I engaged the Diff Lock and tried that out of desperation.
Next thing and into third gear we were moving still on the hard shoulder so I pulled out and carried on real slow until we got to our final destination within time !!
The wedding day went well and we limped home slowly after and made it home for Christmas.
Yep that’s the history stuff over! all I need to know now is do you think it’s a half shaft problem or the transfer box?

(car scotched, engine stopped, hand brake off, and in neutral ) if its a half shaft then 1 or the other prop shafts will freely rotate when the vehicle is stationary if it does then (with the hand brake on and diff lock on if it the front axle effected) jack 1 wheel up in turn on the effected axle and see if each wheel will turn, the wheel that freely turns has the broken shaft . DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Very Happy Good day, Merry Christmas.
Perhaps I should introduce myself as little Dave's Dad.
David is currently in Germany for about ten days so will be unable to the diagnostics. I am the wrong side of 75 and find driving my 2A hard work so I am not attempting his CDZ. However I do feel some responsibility for it as I introduced him to Land Rovers in 1971!
May I thank you for your help on his behalf.

Regards to all, Derek. Proud owner of 1962 IIA since 1971, Talyllyn Railway enthusiast.

I recon diff has gone, as I don't think half shaft causes rattle symptoms when they go, one bang and that's it, but a diff when it goes, it bang, then it eats its self.

Diagnose as above, drive with handbrake off and not in difflock, this will then show you where your problem is, it'll be the end that the prop is spinning freely, then do the halfshaft check, as they need to be removed for diff inspection anyway, or you could empty to oil from the diff, watching for metal swarf.

Good luck

Andy

Dont discount one of the drive flanges [on the hubs] ... Dead easy to check and If your that lucky its a quick easy fix too Cool Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.
