(car scotched, engine stopped, hand brake off, and in neutral ) if its a half shaft then 1 or the other prop shafts will freely rotate when the vehicle is stationary if it does then (with the hand brake on and diff lock on if it the front axle effected) jack 1 wheel up in turn on the effected axle and see if each wheel will turn, the wheel that freely turns has the broken shaft . DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Good day, Merry Christmas.
Perhaps I should introduce myself as little Dave's Dad. David is currently in Germany for about ten days so will be unable to the diagnostics. I am the wrong side of 75 and find driving my 2A hard work so I am not attempting his CDZ. However I do feel some responsibility for it as I introduced him to Land Rovers in 1971! May I thank you for your help on his behalf. Regards to all, Derek. Proud owner of 1962 IIA since 1971, Talyllyn Railway enthusiast. |

I recon diff has gone, as I don't think half shaft causes rattle symptoms when they go, one bang and that's it, but a diff when it goes, it bang, then it eats its self.
Diagnose as above, drive with handbrake off and not in difflock, this will then show you where your problem is, it'll be the end that the prop is spinning freely, then do the halfshaft check, as they need to be removed for diff inspection anyway, or you could empty to oil from the diff, watching for metal swarf. Good luck Andy |

Dont discount one of the drive flanges [on the hubs] ... Dead easy to check and If your that lucky its a quick easy fix too Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.
