When I attended a 1/2 day LR experience in skipton the instructors views were additional guards were unnecessary for UK Lanes as you should read the terrain first to avoid the diff clanging rocks and if driven at the right speed you shouldn't hit anything too fast . Having just done some Nth York Lanes in my 110 without guards I took their advice with me and didn't clang diffs or steering arms even though there was some Rock steps/lanes to climb and descend. The only time the diffs were close when then lane had deep ruts and the tell tale 3rd rut from early use by those with guards. That said it was useful to follow those with guards as I could see where they were close so that I could drive according. I guess they will protect against the unforeseen rock that flips up or those hidden in water and also make it look "nice"? PS I have a set of QTdiff guards sitting in the garage (got them in QTs Jan sale) I may still fit them to cover off the unknown and when my trail reading abilities are found wanting ie as an insurance policy though suspect they will introduce more grounding as a result. 2023 110 P400e

interesting LRE response, did you ask why the 110 have a steering guard then? and did you enquire as to what the LR2s were fitted with? Cheers

You may be taking it a touch out of context. They meant extra guards as fitted to most "Lets Offroad(ers)". Ps the 110 only has a small tray steerin guard under the diff as std these days (or mine does) and the forward facing steering guards of old seem to be no more or options that aren't fitted to mine or the LRE 110s that I used.
PS whats an LR2? 2023 110 P400e

Like lots of things associated with Land Rovers you will not get agreement on what is best.

Yes I have heard the no need for protection it is down to reading the ground argument before. However I consider it insurance, good to have but you hope you do not need to use it.

Have heard an LRE instructor lecture and he stated that LRE only use NATURAL fibre ropes for recovery purposes. I question this and got the response that they could calculate forces if they use natural fibre ropes. Me? I am more then happy to use SYNTHETIC fibre ropes and straps. I would be more concerned about storage and use of natural fibre ropes then synthetic ropes.

i guess underbody protection, roll cages etc are a complete waste of time, weight and money until you actually need them, then they're worth their weight in gold...

Think i will ignore those words of wisdom,, Many a rocky UK lane, that are drivable, but would be foolhardy, without some axel protection

Being in the real world,, i will stick to the guards i have fitted, (Same as Glyn's mostly)
