Rear folding step woes
Hi All

On Saturday as I was loading the 110 with the new bathroom the rear step gave a sickening lunge.

On further inspection I found one of the rivnuts had finally pulled through the cross member leaving the second somewhat precarious.

As this is quite a common problem I was wondering if anyone, possibly the sponsors, have any reaffixing suggestions.

The step is frequently used as a launch pad up the ladder to the roofrack for loading etc.

Please no funnies about losing weight, I get that ALL the time from the other side of the bed Rolling with laughter

Bellow are a couple of shots of the state of the cross member.

The stretched hole: Hmm looks like I need to do some rust fixing too.

Similar problem and same solution...

Finally as mk1collector do. I replace the rivnuts by a bolt with a nylock nut with good washers.
No problem since (3 years)

There is a TSB about this and a fixing kit available from Land Rover to fit behind inside the cross member. I bought this fixing kit to fit my secondhand step before I damaged the cross member.

I think the part number is LKVL500240 and cost me £39.38 +VAT. Quite expensive, but it would have taken me ages to faff about getting the right sized bits and bobs and it included all the necessary fittings that didn't come with my secondhand step.

I think I downloaded the TSB. I'll try and remember to post it when I get home so you can see the detail.

Wow Shocked that's a hefty price when a couple of bolts, nuts and washers are about 3 or 4 quid!

As stated above, I just got a couple of m10 bolts, lock nuts and big flat washers. Job done, couple of euro and a few minutes.

I did see while trawling previous posts a reference to a LR Fix thanks Inigo, what did it consist of?

As for the general repair method suggested by all you other grand defender folk, how did you get into the cross member to hold the nuts while doing it up?

Cheers

There are holes all over the place in the cross member but a bit of contortionism helps Mr. Green

It shows shaped bits of metal welded to nuts so that they do not rotate. Also suggests which way to shove your hand to hold your nuts (as it were).

Depending on the age of your vehicle, it could have been considered a warranty item from reading the bulletin. Might be worth arguing the toss.

Cheers Inigo

I am waiting for my local dealer to call me back so I could question them about it.

Its an 06 TD5 but I am still paying for extended warranty so as you say it may be worth asking about them fixing it.

As for changing to a towbar step, I use several interchangeable Dixon Bate plates, (Alko for caravan, 50mm for scout traillers and a Nato for the Sankey if i ever fix it)

I didn't like the folding one, so I fitted one to the rear tow bar mount:

Works great, less complex, it's galvanized so hasn't rusted (I painted it with bvlack hammerite).

I'm sure it was only around £15...

Lots available on t'internet like this

A double one is available from a site sponsor:
