A friend of mine has just given up on his, he tried to get me sell mine to him, but after struggling to find a nice Td5 pushed the boat out a nearly new 110 from a main dealer earlier this year. After a few minor problems inc. corrosion the final straw was last week when he could hear a rattle every time he hit a bump. I had read about brake pads rattling so suggested looking at them, but this wasn't the problem so back to the dealer it went, turned out springs in the clutch had broken. He's just part ex'd it for an Audi Allroad

currently becuase LRA came out to diagnose the problem LRA have arranged a car through enterprise. unfortunately they'd not got any disco's available at the time and asked if I'd be happy with a freelander - said no probs to that. so I've got a hse freelander.

I'm very surpised how poor the fuel economy is - doing 32 mpg.....get 30mpg out of the def and I'd have expected to see a substantial improvement ?

however my truck was off the road for 4 weeks recently which was warranty work booked in via the local dealer - ended up with a citreon ds3. now THAT did 94mpg on a trip back from milton keynes !!
and 83mpg on a return trip to bristol.

There's no limit to how many claims can be made on the manufacturers warranty.

On many 'second hand' warrantys from used car forecourts, there is a monetary value claim limit.

On the Land Rover Approved Used Warranty policy, I beleive the warranty value limit is the purchase price of the vehicle.

JH Currently....... all gone...... pending delivery of a mid life crisis.......
Previously..... Quite a few! I really am a sucker for them!

oh joy !

picked the car up earlier after a couple of weeks plus.......and....

all good.


until I got 2 miles down the road and the dashboard started flashing at me !! Big Cry

turn round and back to the dealer !!!

turns out to be a dodgy earth but I was less than impressed upon arrival.

was greeted with a 'everything ok sir'

response......NO !

To be fair to the dealer tho they got it straight in and resolved the problem very quickly Thumbs Up

back to the g.box. everything seems to be good but whatever they've done I understand its a mod that's in its infancy and I'm one of their genepigs ! - output shaft flange? anyone heard of that before?

- I hope it turns out to be a good mod they've dreamt up. give me patience.

Perhaps there is a case for buying nearly new/still in warranty Defenders - from a LR dealer.

The previous owner (garage if ex demo) would have had to d/w any faults & foibles, & LR would have had to sort if re-selling. There should also be FSH for such a vehicle. More likely estates than pickups though. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I'd agree if it weren't for the experience I gained from my last purchase from a LR dealer. 6 month old 110 xs !

anyway I've said this before so I should now better.......

it seems to be all sorted / fixed and working well (as I start holding my breath).

That rings a bell. I read something about this not too long ago and I'm sure there where problems on some cars where the gearbox shaft wasn't lubricated properly when its mated to the Transfer box on assembly (apparently its not lubed by the G/box or T/box oil in use and just wears out).

Ask them if the 'mod' consists of a thumbful of grease !

It is the extension shaft fitted on the output of the GFT MT82 gearbox. There is a doohicky attached to gearbox output shaft (where on a Mustang etc the drive flange is fitted) with an external male spline and a short extension shaft with a corresponding female spline fits over this and then engages with the input gear in the transfer box. The splines are supposed to be greased on assembly and sealed for life, unfortunately on some vehicles the life isn't very long!

The only good thing is that although repair does involve the removal of the transfer box, the parts which wear can be replaced without having to fit a new gearbox or transfer box.

It is a fault which has been mentioned several times on this forum, and has happened to several members. I wonder if there was a bad batch, or possibly every now and again someone forgets the grease.

I think it's just one of those awful design flaws that Land Rover are so good at.

Splined joints wearing prematurely due to lack of lubrication is no new issue to Land Rover's design team. Wheel hub drive flanges on many vehicles were a particularly bad issue for many years. And even the very item you speak of, the transfer box output spline, used to wear badly before they fixed the design in the mid-nineties.

Still, with proper lubrication the Tdci setup should work okay. Oil-splash would be best (as per previous models), but good application of grease should do the job. Works okay on the splined interface between the clutch friction plate and the gearbox input shaft after all.

3-0 to landrover.....

3rd time off the road in 2 months. 4wks off, almost 2wks on, 2wks off, almost 2wks on and now off again.

went off to milton keynes today and thankfully the wipers works all the way there and ALL the way back - even after it had stopped raining and I'd turned them off......

running round in an evoke now Big Cry

more good news....

they've just told me that the door they replaced which has the new rubber seal at the bottom and is therefore different to the other one will be staying ie if I want to replace the other old one to match the new one I'll have to sort it Shocked

I have spoken to them this morning and they now have 'case on me'.....

whether thats gonna help I'll have to wait and see....

Shocked while speaking to them they suggested I could buy an extended warranty !!!

(I hope I mis-understood them when they mentioned that !!)

just had to give the evoke back. the windscreen motor park switch repaired.

should be Very Happy

only its Sad ......make that a Big Cry

after replacement part for the transfer box I seem to be back to square one in terms of noise. I must admit I can now get a lovely smooth gear change etc unlike before. however the issue that sounds like engine pinking / fuel starvation / lack of power seems to be back.

I'm not sure if I'm having bad luck or what but I'm really really get p!ssed off with this now.

its been off the road for about 7 weeks during the 10 !

what I can say is LRA are great - but I'd rather not know that.

can anyone suggest an expert ! I've got to the point where I'm going to look into fixing the car and claiming costs off LR - as far as I'm concerned the f-ing thing isnt fit for purpose.
