2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Orkney Grey

Jacking and Axle Stands

This may seem like a noddy question...

I'm about to change the front shocks on my Puma 110, so I want to support the chassis on axle stands.

I have checked the manual but can't really find what I need.

Can you put tha axle stands under almost any of the chassis main components? I was thinking of just behind the front bumper so they're really easy to get at.

I assume this is OK, as I know many use a pillar jack here as well?

I usually put them just in front of the baulkhead outriggers, means you can roll in and out easily and not banging your head on them. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Get a good quality bottle jack or trolley jack.

Have tried the 2 tonne trolley jacks from the big tool sheds and was not impressed. They had a small saddle and tend to sink under load of a Defender.

Got a 3 tonne German trolley jack from Difflock and it has a 6" saddle and is

Get good quality 3 tonne axle stands as well

Safety comes first! How much is your head worth???

Thanks chaps, I do have a decent trolley jack and 2 x 3 ton axle stands...

I am careful about squishing my head!

You don't need to jack the vehicle at all to change any of the shocks on a defender.

Thanks, I had read that elsewhere...but the LR Workshop Manual says:

1. Loosen road wheel retaining nuts.
2. Support chassis on stands and remove road wheel.
3. Support axle weight with jack.
4. Remove shock absorber lower fixing and withdraw cupwasher, rubber bush and seating washer.
5. Remove four shock absorber bracket fixings.
6. Withdraw shock absorber and bracket assembly.
7. Withdraw lower seating washer, rubber bush and cupwasher.
8. Remove fixings, shock absorber to mounting bracket.
9. Withdraw mounting bracket.
10. Lift off top seating washer, rubber bush and cupwasher.

Ignore that, they always miss the bits about using the wire brush to remove debris and rust from the threads etc.
A five minute phone call will have you sorted, and set up to do all the shockers in 15-20mins a corner.
