That all depends how the Hannibal rack attaches to the rear crossmember!
I have a DC with a Sonic carrier and a Patriot rack, and that works fine. I can take and post some photos if it is of interest. The Sonic carrier is great with the rack since I have an IW canopy (full width flap) which means that it is not possible to fit a rear ladder, so I just climb up on the spare wheel instead. The Patriot rack is fitted with the parts needed to clear the IW canopy, namely two supports which run from the rack to the crossmember just outside the profile of the vehicle sides. It would not be possible to use a rear ladder with the IW canopy (because of the full width flap), but a shortened ladder, or one that has been altered a bit, would probably not interfere with the Sonic carrier. I have a feeling that someone here has done what you have in mind. |

Blackwolf - thank you - thats hugely useful
A photo would be great when you get five but no hurry - I like the idea of no ladders but struggling to imagine how that looks in terms of integrity - but guessing the supports you've mentioned do the same job - Im not very good at this sort of thing and will pass across to hubby once Ive ordered it all!! Jean
Have a look at this post http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1408.html On about page 4 you will see Sonic's DC with full length rack and his wheel carrier. No idea which rack he had. Probably the best idea would be to PM Matt (sonic3d) and ask him directly. Jean, good call, do your research first is a good idea
Not all aftermarket kit is compatible with other aftermarket kit. We are official Patriot resellers so have uplifted some of the Patriot photos Patriot roof rack for double cabs are normally like this with two rear ladders as support For an IW canopy or other canopy with door width flap that arrangement would be fine. However with a full width flap that arrangement will not work. However all is not lost Just had a quick look at our Hannibal trade price list, yes it list a 110 DC but with two ladders so I would imagine the same problem would occur. If I remember I will will speak to Kevin and see what other information I can find out. Brendan |

While not specifically about the Sonic wheel carrier, my current understanding is....
The Patriot rack attaches to the chassis using the 2 body mont screws on either side. Some Wheel carriers will fit, if the ladder is modified something like this... Click image to enlarge The Hannibal rack fits to the top of the tub, With little knowledge of the sonic wheel carrier I belive it would fit well with the Hannibal rack, less so with the Patriot. Personally I have a Patriot and have yet to come up with a solution so have left the second rack off for now. I will probably either cut the rack or have a strut fabricated. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Cutting the ladder as shown in the first photo should allow it to fit with the Sonic carrier,. If the Hannibal rack's ladders bolt to the tub at waist level, that should be ok too.
Neither of these will work with an IW or IW-style canopy though since you won't be able to open the flap. For that you will have to have an arrangement like Patriot supplied me. I will try to post a photo tomorrow . If you do fit a Sonic carrier (undoubtedly the best imho) and you have an IW canopy it is necessary to make a simple alteration to the carrier to allow the rear flap to clear the wheel. |

Bob, Brenden, Ben and Blackwolf -thank you very useful indeed.
I don't have the IW rear but do have a Patriot Security Tilt on the back so keen to retain the current ease of use with the added extras, drives hubby potty just when he thinks I'm all sorted I have another idea ! Will let you know what we end up doing Bob have always loved following your DC changes, what are your wheel and tyre combination, looks great, but I am very road biased as travel to west London several times per week (120 miles trip) Thanks again Jean Defender 110 Puma Utility XS |

You will find that any wheel carrier will foul the hinged "cat flap" on IW, Truckman and Camelbac type boxes.
To get into the back of mine I have to: - Open the wheel carrier - Open top cat flap - Open bottom door. It can be a PITA if your in a hurry, but I find it adds an extra level of security as I can lock the wheel carrier closed using s a padlock on the cottle pin. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Thanks Jean I run ZU 16*7 (anthracite finish) with BFG AT's - 265*75*16. excellent combination for on and off road. Mine is used as a daily drive, 50 mile round trip, and on numerous long road trips and the combination is perfect. I've got a patriot rack on the 110 dc with a sonic carrier and truckman top I fabricated a steel pole in place of the o/s rear ladder so it works fine and is still strong

Did you run the pole to the body or Chassis?
I am thinking of running th to the top of the tub on mine for ease. 2002 Defender 110 DC |

I ran it to the two bolts on the chassis (had to be bent to clear the fog lamp) but would work on the tub capping but more drilled holes Formerly mao99999 16 Focus RS Nitrous Blue. 11 FFRR TDV8 Vouge SE Black Black. 08 DEFENDER SVX SOFT TOP (SUPERB) 08 DEFENDER 110 DCPU Stornoway grey (Overland Exploration Unit) 05 Fiesta ST 150 Van 04 Jaguar XKR 4.2 Supercharged V8 02 DEFENDER 90 TD5 (next years soft top project) 95 DEFENDER 110 CSW 300 TDi Phoenix black 95 DEFENDER 90 HT Monti Carlo blue COUNTY 300 TDi 67 109" SERIES 2a TUNED 200 TDI 64 DAVID BROWN 990 rat look 55 86" SERIES 1 |

Here are some photos of the set-up on my DC, with apologies for the normal dirty state of the vehicle!
The original type of Patriot arrangement for use with the IW top had two supports which attached to the IW top itself, but apparently there were issues with dimensional repeatability with the top (it seems IW build each top individually by eye, rather than with a tape measure!). The current arrangement is as shown in the photos, running to the chassis (to my surprise the dimensions of the Landrover are less random than the top). The worklights are, of course, a non-standard addition. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge This photo shows the modification I had to make to the Sonic carrier to allow the rear flap of the canopy to open. It is simply an offcut of steel bar which shifts the wheel approx. 6" towards the nearside of the vehicle, (6" to the rear when the carrier is open). Click image to enlarge |
