thermostat / normal operating temp.
The temperature guage in my new-to-me td5 seems to sit a little over 1/3 of the gauge. Is this normal or do they normally sit in the middle of the dial? I ask because the heater output seems cooler than my tdi and I'm wondering if I have a faulty thermostat.

Sounds normal, even.with the cooler heater. Take a look at the controls on the top of the heater box, easier if you get someone to move the leavers in the cab so you can see which is which and also which way round they go. You may find that you can "gain" a bit more as the hot setting inside may not be putting the lever on the heater box in the full position.

Mine sits just below 1/2 - I read somewhere that this was the normal position, if there is such a thing !

Should add that it has just had a new thermostat.

Agree with JWL, check that on full heat the lever on the heater box goes all the way over, on full heat mine still had about 1/2" of extra travel at the box end. Still need to adjust the cable !

My temp gauge sits at just below 1/2. Yours sounds a little on the low side. If the heater lever on the matrix is not moving fully that would affect the temp in the cabin, however it will make no difference to the temp gauge.

Suggest check thermostat is not stuck open, have you noticed it takes a long time for the temp gauge to get to 1/3, that would also suggest thermostat stuck open. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top

It should be at 88.2deg Celsius.
Slightly to the left on the middle. Mind you, the gauge is not linear.
It starts moving around 65deg only. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

That's probably the temperature at idle.

You usually see around 95 degrees when the engine is running under normal conditions.
