Sikaflex 291 as a gasket sealant
Is Sikaflex 291 any good as a gasket sealant coupled with a proper gasket?
The reason for asking is I have replaced my rocker gasket on the TD5 at least twice maybe three times with Gen LR one and after-market ones. I have tried just gasket and tried with Hermitite red and blue. The leaks return after a few months, Namely the half moon at the rear of the rocker and above the intake manifold.

The other Censored is the front plastic disc on the front of the engine. Again, Gen LR and after market ones. With and without gasket sealant.

The only difference on my 99' Td5 is I have an AMC head.

So having used red and blue sealant I am thinking of trying Sikaflex 291 as I have some,
if its no good, what sealant is good?
Oh and also tried the sealant used by LR to seal the sumps on Pumas.

I have checked the rocker breather and that's clear and done the bolts up to specified torque.
Or is a LR thing and they all leak? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I'll give a Thumbs Up to Sikaflex for most leaks! It's worked a treat to seal my sump, and a few other things Very Happy An engine to TDi for!

Whilst Sikaflex 291i is brilliant stuff it can only be used in temperatures of -40 to +90 on the rocker cover I would use Holdtite RTV853. Better than Sikaflex in a hot oily environment and used prolifically in the marine engineering world.

Cheers K9F. If its good for Marine environment and upto 270 deg'c then it could be worth a dabble.
Maybe that's were I am going wrong and the Hermattie blue/red is breaking down with the heat? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Have you checked if the head is warped or twisted. If it keeps blowing gaskets it sounds like something isn't right..?

Cheers

Might be worth putting it on a flatbed to check next time you take it off..

I wouldn't fret about a warped head just yet. Degrease as much of the rocker cover gasket surface as possible/practical. Try the Holdtite as it is 'fit for purpose' and a high grade and effective sealant and I reckon you'll have no further worries.

Its not the head I am taking off! But worth checking the flatness of the rocker. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I'd imagine most of the products mentioned will do the job just fine.

I use Wurth products for various jobs and find them very good quality.
