Been a while since I updated this thread. I got down to Staysure tyres and got a couple for training. Some for dragging, some for throwing then the daddy for flipping!

The big one is such a mental game, unless you go at it with confidence it just wont go. The tyres have become a big part of our saturday morning conditioning session along with the prowler sled and 'strongman' training log.

A massive thanks to jollymuckshifter for getting me in touch with Staysure tyres. I'm planning another trip down there soon, need a couple more, some smaller....one bigger!

Just wondering what you paid for those tyres? I'm looking to get some myself but don't want to spend a fortune. Cheers.

Nothing mate, the companies have to pay to get rid of them.

I phoned in advance, turned up and he pointed to the pile that I could help myself to. They're all dirty and wet which makes them a nightmare to load onto the trailer. I'll be doing another trip down there in Feb, can let you know when and go the same time.....help load um up?

Where you planning on flipping them? They're bloody loud as they hit the floor!! Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful!

I was planning on flipping them in my garden (I have quite a large garden) so hopefully they won't be too loud. I was also thinking of stacking a few up to practice my vertical jump.

That would be good RE: going at the same time in Feb. Although i'm not sure i've really thought it through as I don't have a trailer to transport them, but let me know anyway as I might be able to sort something out. I've just started getting into strength training so it would be nice to meet someone who knows what they're talking about.

Speedy at a guess 280-300kgs. Me and a mate can't pick it up right off the floor and we dead lift quiet a bit. Even at 300kgs we should be able to lift it between us but add the awkward shape factor.

Z107 if your garden is big enough, should be fine. Just don't plan any 06:30 training sessions. To be honest if your only starting out I wouldn't worry about tyres and logs etc just yet. Get to the gym and get right amongst the Olympic lifts (dead lift, clean & press, snatch etc) You deffo need coaching on these as you can really hurt yourself if done wrong. Once you got them lifts sorted then get tyres, logs, railway sleepers, rocks, sleds etc. as the weight you lift will drop due to the awkwardness of the shape. (You could of course already be nailing the above to a good standard, if so sorry)

I am far from the font of all knowledge on this but the 3 guys I train with are personal trainers and one is a strength and conditioning coach, and I know that's what they'd say. Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful!

We pay £60-£150 per tyre to dispose of an earthmover tyre, dependant on size.Anyone such as Thor who collects a tyre is doing the tyre company a favour.I always keep a several dozen scrap tyres in stock for strongman requests and they also get used as dockside fenders.
Z107- Be very careful trying to stack tyres mate, they are tricky to handle when trying to place them in a stack if they topple the combined weight of then WILL hurt you.
Always closely check the tyres for casing damage the steel that protrudes can be like needles and they will shred your hands also major sidewall damage can nip you as the tyre flexs when being lifted.
Other than have fun with them.......Anyone in the north east wants any tyres then get in touch,i may also be able to drop them off for you as well.

I didn't realise it cost that much to get rid of them!!

Good advice Jolly, Be very selective Z107. I've been down twice and come back empty handed as they had nothing suitable.

Why cant you be down here Jolly?!?! Offering to deliver as well, I'd tear your bloody arm off if closer! I need to get more asa mate is opening a crossfit box (gym), as functional fitness is deffo they way forward. We'll still have all the strong man kit though....We even bought an atlas stone the other week. Only an 80kg one but what an effort, not sure I've lifted anything that took so much effort!! Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful!

One of my regular strongman visitors takes away 25 Litre drums, fills them with sand apparently they're versatile.maily walking with one in each hand, similar to WSM type events, also 205 Litre barrels filled with water are something he uses as well

Water weighing roughly 1kg a litre, they'd be some proper heavy barrels!! I've got a couple of smaller ones, like beer kegs for throwing etc but may have to look into something bigger.

Training and eating going well at the minute. News years resolution was 30 days clean eating will be rewarded by a treat day. I've had no simple carbs or sugar (other than natural from fruit) in 2013. That's no booze, bread, pasta, spuds (except sweet potato) crisps, treats, sweets or dairy. Basically living off meat, salad and veg!

Been working on my over head work the last week or so. Hit a personal best on strict over head press @ 107.5kgs today. Matched my PB on clean and jerk. Got the tyre out for some reps as well this morning, first time since hurting my back. Good to be back on the tyre but forgot how fatiguing it is, especially superset with pull ups!

Overhead squats tomorrow! My legs are already scared!!! Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful!

Thanks for the advice Jolly - I would never of thought to check the casing. You may have potentially saved me a bad injury to my hands!

Thought I'd throw in a quick update.

Things have moved on a bit now as my girlfriend manages the local CrossFit Gym. If you've not tried CrossFit I can't recommend it highly enough! I was a bit lost with it at first until I found out about CrossFit Strongman, so instead of lifting really heavy stuff a couple of times, I lift it lots of times against the clock! I've also grown to love pull ups and burpees!!!

Me and my 100kg atlas stone Very Happy Possibly the hardest thing I've ever done!!

Living in the Fens....
Was on the X trainer at the gym staring blankly outside & noticed the pile of tractor tyres laying in the tyre dealers yard opposite... Remembered this thread so after my session went to speak to them & they're more than happy to let tyre flippers like yourself to help themselves. Lots of tractor tyres all different sizes.
