2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Alaska White
Car Park Clearance
I have a small issue that I cannot get into the free car park at work, instead having to pay £12 a day which is getting a big silly now. Crying or Very sad

Has anyone lowered their Defender? And if so what effects did it have, the car park I can use for free has a 1.8m clearance - I am not sure that the official height of the Defender actually is. Question

Think I read somewhere the height of a standard Defender 90 on 7.50x16 tyres is 2020mm, other versions with different tyres etc may be higher. Based on the 2020mm you'd need to lower it by a whopping 220mm (or 9 inches in old money).

1.8m seems a bit low for a car park height restriction. aren't they usually 2.2m or something? I'm taking mine on the ferry to the Isle of Man tomorrow and have also had to pay extra because it's more than 1.8m high Big Cry . A couple of mates are taller than that, would they have to pay extra too? Rolling with laughter

A standard 110 is around 2.04m. Whilst anything is possible, I think that to lower one to under 1.8m would be such a compromise (let alone a challenge) that you'd be better off buying another car. Darren

Measure the actual car park restriction barrier.

The reasone why I say this is because they all varey. When I was in Ireland I drove up to a multistorey car park as part of a shopping mall. I stopped at the entrance as the height restriction was 1.9m (not good when running larger tires and roll cage). As I selected reverse a guy came out of the office and asked why I wasn't going in...I pointed out that my truck is more like 2.2-2.3m tall- he took a step back and had a look and said- 'Not a problem, it will fit'.... I very cautiously drove in waiting for a scrape with no problems- I evenm had about 50cm clearance from the lowest part of the roof!!

Since then I have been in various 1.9, 2 and 2.1m car parks..... and my truck is way over those heights.

Haha, or my mum, she managed to peel the brand new Thule roof bars and cycle racks off the roof of our 110 Shocked (in town, on a parking barrier) her comment when she got home - "it used to fit" followed by "I might have forgotten!" Whistle

No damage to the Defender luckily but the roof bars wouldn't straighten out Big Cry 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

What Glyn said.

On a recent trip to France we had a nightmare as most places are 1.9m height restriction. We resorted to hours on Google street view to find a Bordeaux tram stop with a 2m restriction... turned up and it had changed to 1.9m anyway. In fact the car (unmodified 110) went under without any problem. We then parked on the open-air parking deck! Guess it's just to stop lorries etc using it.

Be very VERY CAREFUL about suspended car park clatter board.

Just because you clear the clatter board height barrier does NOT mean you are safe!

Check the actual height marked on the clatter board against your vehicle height rather then do you clear the barrier. The clatter barrier may not be set at the correct height! Guess how I know? Do NOT think that your insurance company will be of any use either.

IF your vehicle is close to the marked height care is still needed. . What is the difference between the actual height and the low point in the car park? Where is the low point in the car park? On a level part or on a ramp?

If on the level you might be OK, however if on a ramp you still might have problems as the back end of the vehicle rises as you go down a ramp due to weight transfer on to front suspension.

Right you are. My 110 is the standard 2.03m in the back. Our office underground parking has official restriction of 2.00m. So after I ordered the Def now more than 4 years ago, I went there on a saturday with my son, using a 2m long folding meter with an additonal 5cm long pice of paper stuck on it, and we measured the entire car park from the entrance gate automatic door until the exit door. With my 2.03 meter there are a few spots where I just have 3cm clearance, but I know the whereabouts. Always drive in at idle speed, and never more than 10km/hr anywhere. Sofar, so good.... Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Fill the back end up with half a ton of stuff, that'll squish the springs and tyres. Rolling with laughter

I have the roofrack and working light sadly that makes it 2.3m tall at the bum end. Big Cry

Having the 'hit' for £12 a day surely the wise and sensible thing to do would be to buy a little runaround just to get you back and forth to work as LRA stated too?
Surely it's a 'no brainer' whatsoever????

Here's one, right colour too for Brighton apparently.... Rolling with laughter

Currently only £514 with less than 60k on the clock....
