2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Belize Green

vibration in dterring wheel at 90

dear all,
i just acquited a def td4 110sw 2007 model with40000 kms. the steeeing wheel vibrates at about 90km/h, but after this speed ( at 100/110 km/h) no more vibration.
the seller told me that this is normal fo a Defender. Is that true ?

A Defender newbie.

Get the front wheels balanced. Vibrations that come and go are usually a balancing issue. If they are constant then its an alignment issue.

Thank you, however if the wheels are not well balanced , they won't be used equally , and they are correct .

Not necessarily. You might have lost a balance weight, or the tyres may become unbalanced as they wear. This is more likely on an off-road or mud oriented tread pattern, when crenellation can cause significant wear-related balance issues.

I periodically reverse the direction of rotation of my BFGs in order to prevent this.

It is also possible for a pair of slightly unbalanced wheels on the front axle to have radically different effects on the steering depending on the phase of the impalances across the vehicle. Since this will vary as a result of steering action, tyre wear/pressure/teemperature, and a host of other issues, the results can be unintuitive.

Since getting your wheel balance checked is cheap and easy, it is a failry logical first step.

thank you , i will do the check.
was just not sure, as the seller told me that if there was a problem with the wheels , the vibration will occurs at high speed and will increase with the speed. This is not the case. The vibrations started at 90 km/h and at > 100 disappear completely. He told me that this is a "resonance" phenomena quite common on Defenders.

As this is my first Def. , it is hard to know what is normal and what it is not normal ...

Mine did this and the steering damper was to blame. 1951 80" S1 2.0

Just back from the garage. They've checked all and there was a balancing + parallelism problem !
